Please read the 3 readings required for Week 7.

There will be an open note- in class writing assessment.

For reading number one, Wackwitz & Rakow: (1) Give a brief description of how science and religion participate in the construction of gender?

For reading number two, Gournelos: (2) According to Gournelos, what are the problems with interpreting Mr. Garrison as an iconic representation of homosexuality?

For Reading number three, Leung: (3) According to Leung, why is Leslie Cheung considered a queer icon?

You will have 15 minutes to complete your in class writing. Feel free to either bring in notes or write down your answers and bring them to class ( 4-5 sentences per question).

For Rakow and Wackwtz, find out (1) the two ways in which the term representation can be used, and please elaborate them

For Carlin& Winfrey, find out (2) How did the media represent Clinton’s image?

For Zoonen, find out (3) how does celebrity politics work in two gendered ways?

For Palmer-Mehta, find out (4) what are the differences between personal memory and collective memory?

In class, you will do an in-class writing (15 minutes).  To prepare for it, you can (a) underline the answers on your articles so that you can go back there for the in-class writing; (b) write down on a piece of paper your answers (3-4 sentences per question) and turn it in in class.

Read the three readings listed under Week 4. You can bring your notes.
For Haraway’s article “Feminism and technoscience”, find out what her definition of technoscience is.
For Shaviro’s article “Supa Dupa fly”, be ready to answer the next question:
1) Lil Kim in her video boasts of her power over men. However, her video does not bear a feminist principle. Please explain, why?
And for Marchellus, be ready to answer the next questions:
1) Why was the typewriting in the beginning of the 19th century considered as a beneficial job for women?
2) Explain from the feminist standpoint how does the operator job differ from the job of a typewriter?
In class, you will do an in-class writing (10 minutes). You will be required to write 2-3 sentences. It is an openbook assignment so you can use the readings.

Read the three readings listed under Week 3.  You can bring your notes.

For Lotz and McRobbie, find out what their definitions of postfeminism are and whether they think it is an useful concept to understand gender and media.

For Joseph, find out what her definition of post-race is and whether she thinks it is an useful concept to understand race, gender, and media.

Also, think about if they agree with each other on the definitions of postfeminism.
