berklee middle eastern festival

on monday, my friend leidy and i went to the annual middle eastern music festival at the berklee performance center. i love middle eastern music! and thankfully so does leidy! haha my mom sent me an email a few months ago about some of the shows coming to berklee. they have a few shows a week actually. most of them are only $10 (some of the more popular artists are more).

the middle eastern music festival was incredible. half of the show was the middle eastern fusion group from berklee. they were really talented (but i mean what else would you expect from berklee?). it was really interesting because when you looked at the program almost all of the students were foreign. out of the fifteen or twenty kids in the group, five of them were from america! ahaha most of them were from turkey which makes sense, but then there were some from italy and japan too. the professor who ran it was actually from lebanon.

in the second half, a really famous clarinetist from turkey played, along with a band from new york called the new york gypsy all stars. i guess this clarinestist has basically started his own style of clarinet music and has a worldwide following. now i don’t know a lot about music. i played the flute in middle school and for a year in high school. so i know a bit, but it’s been awhile since i’ve played. but i could still tell that this man had incredible talent. some of the notes he played were just so clear and crisp, they gave me goosebumps.

the new york gypsy allstars were really great too. i am probably going to buy their cd when it comes out. they were also very international. two americans. a macedonian. and a greek. i think that’s why they had such a great rhythm. they all bring something different to the band. the concert was about two and a half hours, but i really wish it lasted longer. i am definitely going to start going to more concerts at berklee!
