  1. Futurama is one if my favorite television shows and I’m glad it’s finally releasing new episodes. I am very familiar with the show and I believe that the introduction of the show and characters were excellent. The description if Amy and Leela’s relationship highlights the tension and frustration they face in the workplace around each other.

Excellent job in relating Shaviro (2005) to both Leela and Amy. This line that you wrote, “She uses her appearance to get ahead, her bare midriff is nearly always visible under her pink jumpsuit and she constantly pokes fun at Leela’s lack of style and femininity,” is a good relation of how Lil’ Kim uses her body to get ahead and gain power in her career. In Wackwitz and Rakow you highlighted how the actual people in real life who do the voices for the show relate some of their personality to the characters to make them more relatable. The peer-review article shed light on the correlation between the television audience and Internet users and Futurama parodies the idea of future technologies. In relation to the article, the internet provides access to episodes of the show, videos of Missy Elliot and Lil Kim, and more examples of feminist research.

Along with the paper, the presentation was professional and I enjoyed the video of the competition between the men and women on lying. Overall, I enjoyed reading the paper and found nothing that stands out in terms of needing correcting. The reference page Is properly cited and in text citations are used according to the APA format.

  2. I have never heard this television show Futurama and I will watch this funny show after the great presentation by Mark. At first, Mark introduced the whole characters and outline of Futurama which raised our attention a lot. In addition, from his analysis of Leela and Amy, I understand that their relationship and opposite characteristics reflect many social issues especially gender communication.

In your analysis paper, you described typical stories between Leela and Amy from Futurama and cited more than three articles about the two characters (such as Groening, M, & Chesney, C. (July 18, 2012) The Butterjunk Effect and Groening, M, & Fong, E. (June 23, 2011) Neutopia) which help us understand more about these two characters. Through your explaination,I know how Missy Elliot and Lil Kim reflect different feminist characters. Furthermore, the peer-reviewed journal article “Virtuality and the Television Audience: The Case of Futurama” by Steve Bailey, you from another angle told us how the Internet has changed people’s acts from watching television to watching, discussing and sharing online. However, if you explained more about the connection between the peer-reviewed journal article and the two articles we have read to analyze the characters that will be better.

Overall, your presentation and paper are both excellent in giving us more examples and analyses in feminist research.

  3. It is an interesting topic to analyze an animated character based on gender. The description of Futuram by Mark, both in his analysis paper and in the presentation are attractive to make me want to watch the show.
The introduction part is short but clear to make the audience understand what the show talks about. After that, Mark introduced the characters he wanted to analyze. He used detailed dialogues and examples to show the characteristic of the characters, which is convincible and clear.
During the analysis part, Mark linked the characters and Shaviro’s work perfectly. He made a contrast between Leela and Elliot, Amy and Lil’kim. He pointed out that they “breaking the definition of female beauty, refusing to be sexy in the conventional male viewpoint” and “uses her appearance and sexuality to manipulate men”. It is a good point to connect characters and representation papers.
Also, Mark organizes his analysis paper well. It contains every required parts and has a good organization. For instance, every paragraph has a theme sentence such as “Amy and Leela often exchange insults passed off as compliments, which often leads to bickering and fights”, which make the analysis clear.
Finally, the clip showed by Mark is impressive and arouse the interest of the audience.
