Public Policy Brittney Keophoxay #10

Maybe I should major in Public Policy or Political Science.  My mentor majored in Political Science during her time in school.  However, what I major in won’t always mean I will work in the field I studied in.  My former boss was medical student at Brown University and most of us know that Brown is a very prestigious university and most of the students that go there usually major in something in the medical field.  She ended up working at a non-profit as the executive director for the Socio-Economic Center for Southeast Asians.

Hmm, maybe I should apply for Brown’s public policy program after I get my undergraduate degree.  It would be nice because it’s right in Providence, I get to see all my friends, work with RI’s Southeast Asian community, and I pretty sure I can get a job ASAP with my connections.  I still want to apply to UC Berkeley some time in my life because of the high Southeast population, University of Southern California because of the wide range of majors and the University of Washington because of the high Laotian population…and Korean hehe!

Who knows, I might end up interning in San Francisco with SEARAC, or D.C with Legacies of War, go to Wisconsin and study Southeast Asian languages, start something back home, I don’t know.  The possibilities are endless.  My mentors and boss always tell me, it’s not about what’s on your resume when you apply for a high end job/internship, it’s about the people you know and the amount of effort yo put in your work.  I was definitely fortunate enough to have worked for a Bank of America non-profit as my first job with the recommendations of my mentors and everything just went on from there.

Some Old Friends Brittney Keophoxay #9

I really do miss a lot of my friends.  Once Summer ended we all kind of went our own separate ways.  Some went to the military, some went to school, and some entered the work force.  We all kind of got really busy and just tried to keep in touch with each other whenever we can.

I understand they’re all busy because I am too.  It’s really bad too when we are all on each others throats about things, so space is nice from time to time.  Over that time I don’t see my friends, it just makes me want to see them even more.

I’m really looking forward to the break though, can’t wait to see old faces again.  This Winter break shoud be an exciting month off 😀

Snow Brittney Keophoxay #8

I can wait for a lot of snow.  The sky when it snows is absolutely perfect. It can be 1 o’clock in the morning and bright outside. The silence of everything when it snows is beautiful. You can barely hear a sound when the snow covers everything. Just watching the snow fall and stick to the ground is beautiful. Yeah I guess it sucks that it’s cold and you have to shovel it out, but coming in from the cold and putting on warm clothes, sitting in the heat, and drinking hot chocolate is so relaxing. The last time I actually had a lot of snow was when I a senior in high school. I miss the snow so much.

New Environment Brittney Keophoxay #7

During my time in Boston, I’ve met a lot of new people.  Coming from the small state of RI, I was used to a lot of things.  Seeing the same people everyday, going to the Cambodian market to get food, go to work down the street, go to Brown University to hang out with the bboys, etc.  Here, it’s so different.  I now made new friends, go to Boston University and M.I.T to hang out with the bboys there, eat out a lot.  It’s not all fun and games though.  I’m not used to going out all the time and I wasn’t used to saying no to people.  I’ve definitely learned how to put my foot down.  School is a priority of mine, plus I’m paying for my education as well.

It’s nice though.  It’s reminds me to keep an open mind and talk to people whenever I get the chance.  You’ll never know, some stranger sitting across the room from you might be your best friend in the future if you talk to them.

Suffolk’s Library Brittney Keophoxay #6

The University’s library, is by far one of my favorite places at the school.  It’s a quiet place where I am able to get a lot of work done.  I’m a very studious student and I take my studies seriously.  I can never study in my dorm because my bed is there.  I tend to just fall asleep on my bed right away.  My room is very messy due to the little time I have to keep it that way.  The mess is so distracting so it’s best if I not stay in my room for long hours.  Also, if floor mates are being noisy, I can’t get my work done either.  The library scenery is very relaxing as well.  I can actually just sit anywhere at the library, even the floor and get my work done.  There are times where I get too focused with my work, I lose track of time.  The library is a place for me to focus and it’s probably the only place for me to focus.

Finals are coming up and of course that is going to be the first place I am going to head off too!

End of the Semester-Brittney Keophoxay #5

I’m glad the semester is coming to and end and I learned a lot over the span of the first semester. Not only did I learn the subjects I was taking but I also learned some life lessons.  I learned to manage my time better, to say no to friends, utilize sources around campus and more.  I feel as I am prepared to take on the next semester from what I did and didn’t do this semester.

The break coming up will also give me some time to think of what I want to do in the next couple of months.  Maybe I’d like to apply for an internship over the Summer, or apply for a Summer Institute in Wisconsin, take Summer classes, etc?  Education is great and it opens so many doors to meeting new people and advancing yourself in the world.

College means we have to learn how to prioritize what we want to do in life, how we are going to get there, and what is the first step to do so.

I have to say, I am pretty proud of most of the things I’ve done so far.  I hope to keep learning and pushing myself during my time in college.

SEARCH National Conference-Brittney Keophoxay #4

Today was the first SEARCH (Southeast Asian Restoring Community Hope) National Conference.  It was great meeting all these leaders and professionals.  Each panelist discussed topics about basic needs, health, policy and advocacy, education, and cultural awareness among our community.  I really like national conferences because it’s one of the few times I go up to people and shake their hands to say, “Hi, I’m Brittney, nice to meet you.”  I collected plenty of business cards and I surely will get in touch with them sometime soon.  Many offered me internship opportunities and I think it’s great being just a first year student.  I think I might want to look into the Political Science major at Suffolk University.

Thai Night-Brittney Keophoxay #3

This year I was appointed the new secretary for the Asian American Association at Suffolk.  The first major event was Thai night.  We all got together and took the green line to a Thai restaurant in Brookline called Dok Bua.  I was a little nervous at first because I’m usually really shy around new people.   By the end of the night, we all had a lot of great food, great laughs, and new friendships.  The treasurer and I were the only two with cameras and we went picture crazy.  We took pictures left and right!  By the end of the night, we took different group pictures.  There was a picture of the E-board, the adviser, and then the entire Asian American Association.  I made a lot of great friends.  The next major event is the AAA showcase!  I’m really looking forward to it.  The president and I are performing a choreography to a medley of K-POP songs.

Winsor Dim Sum (Brittney Keophoxay) #2

Winsor Dim Sum was actually a restaurant my friend told me to check out.  I’m still new to the Boston area and I asked her what places she recommended.  The day before classes, she took me out.  I thought it was going to be just like any other Chinese restaurant I’ve been too.  The food is actually REALLY good.  I had really liked the taro bubble tea and the tapioca balls are actually a lot chewier than the ones back home in Providence.   I like to go here from time to time with my friends since Suffolk University is right next to China town.  I highly recommended the steamed buns!  It’s a great place to catch up with friends and eat great food!

안녕하세요 여러분! (Hello Everyone!)

My name is Brittney Keophoxay and I am a Laotian-American who was born and raised in Woonsocket, RI.  I’m still undecided with my major but I’m kind of leaning towards Business (Global Business to be exact).

I spend most of my time in Providence RI with my friends who break dance.  I love photography and attend bboy jams whenever I get the chance to capture my friends in action.  The latest jam I attended was the Project 401 (Area code for RI) where bboys/bgirls from MA and CT even competed.

Other than that I really love Asian culture and would like to study more Asian languages.  I currently know how to speak Lao, Thai, some Korean and taking Japanese at Suffolk.  I hope to study abroad to South Korea someday.  I also wrestled on my varsity high school wrestling team in the 119lbs weight class.  The guitar is something I play when to pass the time away.

So far I have enjoyed my time in Boston.  I made new friends and I even scored an internship with the Asian Boston Media Group in Quincy.

Come visit me at Tremont!
