I saw Sofia, Ronie and Kalene at the fair, what did you all think? Any conversation topics you have about majors would be good to have here apart from what you put in the journal. I really believe it doesn’t matter for your career what you major is. There are doctors with history degrees and philosopher and nannies who are engineering majors.
I went.. First off, I was really disappointed because all the food was gone but….. it was very informative. I am a government major so that was the booth that I went to first . They asked me what i wanted to do with my career and I honestly didn’t know at first . All I know is that i want to incorporate my love of theater, being in front of an audience , telling stories, and talking to people with my interest in government and politics. They told me i should definitely consider Broadcast Journalism but not to make any decisions until i finish this year whether I still want to major in Government and broaden my horizons a bit. Broadcast Journalism sound right up my alley but I’m afraid I won’t be able to talk theater classes or stick with Government. I know what I want to do , it’s just hard to find a job that fits all that I want to do and the dream job just sounds like just that , a dream. BUT, I am optimistic. I just read the biographies of John Stewart and Stephen Colbert and see how they made it and I’ll just follow the footsteps.
I completely agree that your major doesn’t decipher what you are going to be when you grow up. When attending the career and majors fair, I instantly felt overwhelmed by the number of choices I had, and felt forced to make a premature decision. In all honesty, I have no idea what I want to major in because I have absolutely no idea what I want to do when I graduate from college. I know that I need a job that will pay the bills, but besides that, I’m at a complete loss. I know that the people at the career fair are only there to help you, but they don’t know who I am as a person, what I like to do and what subjects are my weak and strong points, so I generally find their assistance to be not very useful. I am hoping that by the end of this year, I will have more of a grasp on what I would like to major in, by taking a wide variety of classes to hopefully spark my interest in at least one. When I make big decisions, I prefer to take my time, without assistance, so I can make a more clear headed choice. Like the club fair that I attended in the beginning of the school year, I didn’t like how I felt persuaded by other students to join clubs that I don’t have any interest in. Hopefully, with some time I will be able to decide what I will major in, but for now, I am in no rush to push a decision and will take my time enjoying the classes I am in now.
I am an open major and I wish there was some test to narrow down my interests. I like art, writing, business, etc but that is just too much for me to narrow down. Also I want to factor in job placement after I finish my degree and also if the job I get will pay me well.
The majors that really appealed to me were journalism, Asian studies, and global business. I like the journalism field because I like writing human interests pieces. I wrote articles for newsletters and I really enjoy writing good things about people. I would also be able to incorporate my photography into journalism since photography is a hobby and side job for me. I like Asian studies because it has been sometime that has always interested me ever since I was in middle school. I like learning about the culture, the music, the religion, and pretty much anything and everything it has to offer. Global business is something I just recently began growing an interest in. I kind of like the idea of maybe be a part of a business and being able to travel a lot. Getting out of the country is something I haven’t done yet and I would really like to do so.
The careerfest and our class discussions haven’t not changed my mind about what major I want to pursue. In the meantime I think I just want to explore what majors appeal to me and also what major I will enjoy and do well in.
The first thing I got was the papers for Asian studies. Like I said before, Asian studies is something I’ve always been interested in. I am also currently interning as the Asian Boston Media Group where I get to meet many Asian professional, performers, leaders, etc and I also get to write articles about them and take photos. I may want to minor in Asian studies as I am not sure how far I can get if I pursue it as a major.
Hello!
Because I have already declared a major, I can say I’m fairly confident in what career path I would like to follow. The fair helped me to choose what classes I need to take in order to be prepared for the MCAT’s or DAT’s. Although I found the fair to be less of a “fair” and sort of dry it definitely served its purpose as far as providing the sufficient information.
In terms of working in a field that you didn’t major in, I know a couple of people who’ve done this and love what they’re doing! Im all set in majoring in international relations and hopefully I can work for my dream job. If I do end up working somewhere that doesn’t match my college credentials/ experience, I won’t be mad because its just destiny telling me to do something different. I am not too sure on what I’m minoring in but I’m not really worried about that right now.
It is so true! I know someone who was an art history major, got into law school, and is now a lawyer. The only things a law school looks at is your GPA and LSAT scores, so you can do anything in undergraduate years. I either want to double major in government and art history or minor in one of the two. I do not feel pressured to pick, but the fair encouraged me to hurry up my decision.
