Our 2nd All Rise: Uniting to Advance Women and the Future of Law alumnae panel and award ceremony took place on November 19, 2019 at the Omni Parker House.

Our annual event celebrates the professional achievements of SULS graduates including its trailblazers: the first woman to graduate from Suffolk Law, Marian Archer JD’37, and the first woman to join the faculty, Catherine T. Judge JD’57 LLM’60 – a special award is presented to a distinguished alumna and female faculty member in their names.

The Catherine T. Judge Teaching and Service Award

Catherine T. Judge JD’57, LLM’60 served as Suffolk University Law School’s registrar from 1955–1967. In 1967, she became the first woman to join the Law School’s faculty; in 1974, she was the first woman to earn tenure. Professor Judge taught generations of students contract law and served our community for over five decades. She was a brilliant scholar, an exceptional law professor, a role model, and an empathetic adviser who enthusiastically mentored and counseled thousands of law students. In her name, we recognize distinguished women who exemplify Professor Judge’s commitment to student mentorship and thoughtful pedagogy.

Valerie C. Epps, Research Professor of Law
2019 Catherine T. Judge Teaching and Service Award Recipient

Over the course of her career at the Law School, Professor Valerie C. Epps has taught many subjects including Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Wills and Trusts, and even Chinese Law: American and Modern. Most recently, she taught International Law, The Laws of War, and Immigration Law. During the 2016 spring semester, she served as a Fulbright Specialist at the Women’s Law College, Prince Sultan University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where she taught International Law, International Human Rights, and The Laws of War. She also advised school administrators on a variety of academic issues. During the 2008 spring semester, she was a visiting professor at Hongik University, College of Law, in Seoul, where she taught International Law and International Human Rights. She was awarded a Fulbright Distinguished Lectureship for the 2006 spring semester to teach International Law and International Human Rights at Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Professor Epps has also taught at Boston University Law School, Brandeis University, and the University of San Diego School of Law’s programs in Paris and Mexico City, and has served as co-director of Suffolk Law’s summer program on International and Comparative Law in Lund, Sweden. She has lectured on human rights for the International Bar Association in Dubai and on International Law for the UMKC–Suffolk Continuing Legal Education Program in Oxford, England.

Professor Epps is an accomplished scholar and publisher. In August 2019, her most recent book was published: International Law 6th Edition (Carolina Academic Press 2019 with Cerone and Roth).

The Marian Archer “Trailblazer” Award

Born on November 14, 1910, Marian Archer was the daughter of Gleason L. Archer—founder of Suffolk Law School and Suffolk University—and Elizabeth Snyder Archer. In 1937, she had the distinction of becoming the first woman to graduate from Suffolk Law. In her name, we recognize exceptional alumnae who, through their own work and contributions to the profession, have captured Marian’s pioneering spirit and elevated the status of women in the law.

2019 Marian Archer Trailblazer Award Recipient

Judge Feeney is a neutral for JAMS, which provides mediation, arbitration, and neutral evaluation services in complex disputes worldwide. In this role, she has successfully facilitated settlements in multi-party mediations in a number of bankruptcy cases and adversary proceeding disputes. She was a United States bankruptcy judge for the District of Massachusetts for over 26 years, serving as its chief judge from 2002 to 2006. She served as a member of the United States Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the First Circuit for 24 years and as its chief judge from 2015 to 2019. Judge Feeney is the co-author of Bankruptcy Law Manual and The Road Out of Debt.

A fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy since 2005, she currently serves as a vice president and member of the board of directors, bankruptcy. Judge Feeney is a past-president of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges and has served that association in numerous capacities. From 2016 to 2018, she was the business manager of The American Bankruptcy Law Journal. Judge Feeney is a founder and co-chair of the M. Ellen Carpenter Financial Literacy Project and was a member of the International Judicial Relations Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States (2006–2012). She also was the founder and co-chair of the District of Massachusetts Bankruptcy Court’s various public outreach initiatives. She is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute.

Judge Feeney is a frequent panelist and lecturer on bankruptcy law topics in Massachusetts and across the country. Her most recent accolades include the Boston Bar Association’s 2018 Charles P. Normandin Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2018 National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges Excellence in Education Award, and the 2019 American Inns of Court Bankruptcy Inn Alliance Distinguished Service Award. Prior to her appointment, Judge Feeney was an associate and partner in the Boston law firm Hanify & King, P.C., a career law clerk to the Hon. James N. Gabriel, US bankruptcy judge for the District of Massachusetts, and a partner in the Boston law firm Feeney & Freeley.
