My Traditional Costume

In Saudi Arabia, we wear something called the Thob. It’s a full-length, loose garment with long sleeves. The traditional color is white, but nowadays, new colors have been introduced, such as; brown, navy blue, black, grey and so on.

Now, for a more formal look, wee put on the Shumagh. It’s a square shaped cotton fabric folded into a triangular shape and placed on the top of the head. The, a double black rope like called Al Igal is placed on top of the Shumagh in order to hold it in place.

In my city, we dress a bit different. Everything is the same except we have another style for the headdress. It’s called Umma, it’s a long or large cotton fabric folded many times around the head.

My Favorite Football (soccer) player.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is a Swedish professional footballer. He plays as a striker for Paris Saint-Germain and the Swedish national team. He is one of the worlds top strikers; he’s strong, unpredictable, has great ball control and scores a lot of jaw dropping goals. He was nicknamed Ibracadabra for his stunning powerful goals. Ibra played for four of the top teams in the world; Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, And Barcelona. He accomplished a lot in each club he was in and lead them all to achieving trophies. This year, he beat Xavi, Pirlo, Puyol, Drogba, Casillas to win the Golden Foot award it’s only awarded to players with exceptional career achievements and over 29 years old. He is always fun to watch… Here are some videos of his spectacular goals

Scoozi

Scoozi is located on 235 Newburry street. They serve panini’s, pizza, pasta and other courses. Their food is really good and the prices are not pricey for the food you’re eating. The restaurant is a bit small, but when it’s not cold they have tables and chairs outside. It gives a kind of European feel when you dine out and the weather is nice, especially since it’s on Newburry. I recommend it, it would be a nice place to take your parents or a girl to.

My Thanksgiving

Since I don’t have any family here and I don’t really celebrate thanksgiving, I spent my holiday with a couple of friends. We decided to head to a shooting range but we didn’t find any in Boston. So we rented a car and we drove to New Hampshire to go to a shooting range there. We took 2 rifles, the M16 and the AK47. Even though I was really bad at aiming and was kinda scared at the beginning, I had a great time. Funny thing happened, I was so bad at aiming I somehow was able to shoot a metal thing that was holding the target and it broke and fell. My friends and I had to wait a while til they got it fixed. Then it was back to shooting.

Hookah Lounge – Majed

This was taken in a Hookah Lounge called Habibi. It’s a middle eastern themed lounge, they play arabic music, serve hookah’s, tea and some Lebanese cuisine like hummus. You can go there by taking the B line and get off at Harvard Ave. The lounge is underground, so as soon as you get off the T head towards Mcdonalds you will see steps on the side and just go down. It looks kinda sketchy from the outside but it’s a really cool place from the inside. I go here with my friends when I feel a bit homesick, this place reminds me of home a lot since most of the costumers are middle eastern and even the workers.

Fogo De Chao – Majed

This is a Brazilian BBQ restaurant located in Copley Square. It costs $46.50 per person, but I tell you it’s worth it! You can eat as much as you want!! They have an open salad bar, and they give you this card that’s green on one side and red on the other. Whenever you flip the card to the green side, they will keep bringing slices of BBQ meats to your plate. If your plate is full of you want to take a break just flip the card to the red side. Also they have this Brazilian soda called Guarana, it was reallly good and sweet, I had 2 cans of this. I went there with 4 of my friends, just 5 men together eating meat.

Street Art – Majed

While I was enjoying a late night walk with a couple of my friends in downtown of Boston, on our way back to Copley square where one of my friends lives near by, I spot this graffiti on the wall. From the name Os Gemeos, my friend told me it belonged to two famous Brazilian brothers. This art was a part of their exhibit at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art. This is located in Stuart street.

Thinking Cup – Majed

Thinking cup, a coffee bar located on 165 Tremont street. This was one of the first places I’ve been to with my friends when I was taking English courses when I first came to Boston. I used to go there with my friends everyday after our classes to hang out, have some coffee and study. It’s also a great place to meet new people, since many students from all over the world go there to chill or study. I still go there but not as often, to meet with my friends who are all busy with their studies, and catch up and enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

Max Brenner Restaurant – Majed

Max Brenner is definitely my favorite restaurant in Boston, not because of the food they serve, but because of the delicious chocolate desserts they offer. The interior design of the restaurant is amazing; there are jars filled with different kinds of chocolates stacked on shelves, the lights are dimmed, and it’s spacious. Another thing that caught my attention is that there were pipes that seemed like they were made out of chocolate, though I’m not sure it’s possible it’s made out of chocolate. Another thing about the restaurant that attracts a lot of people is the smell; when you first open the doors and walk in the restaurant, a strong scent of chocolate breeze hits and makes you drool for sweets. Whenever I go in there and take a breath of that chocolate scent I feel like I’m inside Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

They have a lot to choose from on the menu, though I usually go there solely for the chocolate pleasure. I haven’t tried the whole menu, but I know they serve plates like burgers, pizza, pasta, panini, and salads. Overall, their food is not the best I’ve tried but still enjoyable. Let’s move on to the chocolate delights. What can I say? They have a variety of desserts like ice cream, chocolate cakes, crepes, fondue and milkshakes. Now, I haven’t had the chance to order and try all the sweets, but most of the sweets, if not all, are pleasing to the mouth. My favorite one is the Melting Chocolate Truffle Cake, it’s served with a vanilla ice cream and a shot of chocolate milkshake.

The prices are a bit high for a college student, but it wouldn’t hurt to go there once in a while. It’s open until midnight during the weekdays, but on the weekend it’s open later. I go there a lot with my friends, and have a good time. I love the place, and I recommend Max Brenner to anyone who is a fan of chocolate.

It’s located at 754 Boylston Street, in the most desirable neighborhood of Boston, the Back Bay.

Majed Zahran

Hello everyone! My name is Majed, and I’m from Saudi Arabia. I live in Miller, 10th floor, come visit some time. My major is Biochem but I plan to go to Med school after. I’m bilingual, I speak both Arabic and English fluently, although sometimes I get nervous speaking in public or with native speakers so I tend to mess up my English. Anyway, I like soccer, cars and music. I listen to almost everything but country music. What else can I say, Boston’s a great city, I’ve been here for a year now, I still haven’t explored it entirely. That’s about it!
