We are often so busy that instead of celebrating a moment or achievement, we start focusing on the next task. Enjoy the moment. While on your journey, soak it all in. Celebrate along the way – small and big accomplishments.
The end of your journey may be bittersweet. A friend told me that when he ran his first marathon he was sad as he approached the finish line because he didn’t want the journey to end. At first, I thought he was crazy but then I understood what he meant. On the day of my marathon, I tried to think of it as a celebration of all my training. I celebrated each mile by waving to spectators, raising my arms in the air to pump to the beat of the music of bands playing along the route, and giving those who cheered my name a thumbs up.
Celebrate what you have achieved. Only you truly know all you have done to get there. By finding the joy in the journey and celebrating it, the hard times just may be a little easier to get through. Celebrating also gives you something to look forward to along your journey. Take time to celebrate the good stuff. During my training, when I would finish a run, it gave me great pleasure to put a small check mark in pencil next to the run on my training plan. It was a small way to celebrate my accomplishment.
In law school, celebrate small and big accomplishments. For example, take a moment and acknowledge what you have accomplished when you finish a paper you have been working on for a class. Celebrate when you finish taking exams or completing a moot court argument. Celebrate can mean lots of things but doesn’t have to involve a great expense or something that is not healthy. It could be watching a movie you have wanted to see, getting together with a friend over a good meal, or indulging in a special treat. Whether it is getting through a race or a test in school, take a moment and celebrate that you got through a challenge and learned something along the way.
