Psalms: 30-36 Questions

  • The place know as Sheol is mentioned in Psalm 30.3 I know that Jews do not believe in a “hell” per se, but what exactly is this place, and where else is it mentioned in the Old Testament. I am very curious about this.
  • On the right hand margin of Psalm 32, the word Selah is written a number of times. There wasn’t anything in the commentary below the page and I wanted to know what is means and stands for. I know in Hebrew, the word means a stone or rock, but i’m not sure how this really fits into the psalm..
  • In psalm 34.6 does “this poor soul” refer to David? From the description of the psalm, it talks about him. I just wanted to make certain if the quote was talking about him, or any general poor soul.
  • In psalm 33.10 what is “the counsel of the nations?”

Thats about it for now, any help would be appreciated 🙂

Exod. 31.18

“When God finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God”

Who – God, and Moses

Where – Mt. Sinai

When – After the Israelites were wandering the desert

What – The two tablets

The author’s intent in this quote is to remind the readers of the covenant God made with the Israelites, that if you follow these laws, I will make your generations after into great nations. Here we see that the tablets are written by the “finger of God.” This word choice makes God appear to be omnipotent, but human-like at the same time. While God may be a mystical being and we do not know what he looks like, we are given hints every know and then that he has human-like qualities, such as when he made Adam in his image and in Egypt when he took the Hebrews out with a mighty hand. This helps the audience to relate better with God.

Exodus 33. 7-10

Who: Moses, God and Followers

Where: A little outside of Horeb

When: After God had scolded the people about worshiping the calf

What: People watch Moses go to tent and bow to him. They do not follow him to the tent.

Quote: Verse 10 “When all people saw pillar…”

  • Author’s Intentions: Show how all the people who once idolized a golden calf now are respectful and can worship something abstract.
  • Ideas: The people have the ability to evolve from listening to God and his lessons.
  • Word Choice: There is repetition among this quote when god says, “all the people…all of them,” he is reiterating that every single person is included in the description.
  • Images and Symbols present/ideas: The tent is a place for Moses and God to communicate. The cloud is an abstract representation of God and allows the people to worship something abstract,

Exodus 31.1-11

Who: Moses & God

Where: Mt. SinaiWhat: God tells Moses that he has appointed Bezel and Oholiab to construct the tabernacle (the tent of meeting, Ark of the Covenant, the mercy seat, etc).

Quote: I have filled him (Bezel) with divine spirit, with ability, intelligence, and knowledge in every kind of craft, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze” (Exodus 31.3).

Author’s intentions: To show that God has the power to bestow great talent/power upon men such as Bezel and Oholiab.Ideas: God has great power and the ability to manipulate man, but he never seems to abuse it.

Word Choice: God repeats “I have commanded you” a number of times in this passage.

Images: Mt. Sinai, the Tabernacle, Ark of the Covenant.

Exod 32 by Shawn

“He took the gold from them, formed it in a mold, and cast an image of a calf; and they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” (Exod. 32:4)

My entire analysis of this section was based on Aaron. When Moses leaves for the mountain, Aaron is left in charge of the people. He exemplifies the lack of faith in the Hebrew God who delivered them  from Egypt. As soon as the people get restless of Moses’ absence Aaron instead of reassuring them, causes a revert back to the old ways of Idol worship.

What struck me most is that later in the chapter, when Moses comes back, Aaron shies away from the responsibility. He says that the idol formed itself, which is a blatant lie. This to me shows why Aaron wouldn’t be able to lead, he is afraid, doesn’t assume responsibility and cannot control the people even when he has the power.

Chapter 33 Verses 1-6 Command to Leave Sinai

Who: The Lord, Moses, the Israelites.

Where: Sinai.

When:  After God has sent the Plague on the people.

What: God is sending the Israelites out go Mt. Sinai to the land of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Ideas Suggested: God calls the Israelites “stiff-necked people.” He is calling them dedicated followers to him and Moses. He says they are “stiff-necked” because they never turn away from their leader.
