Summer Sonata of Yaoyao Lou

 

Yaoyao Lou (BA 2015) received the KCC Company scholarship in 2015. Yaoyao was a media studies major at the Department  of Communication and Journalism. She graduated in May 2015 with the Latin Honors summa cum laude.

At Suffolk, she worked on Korea-related projects such as proposing a new media company that produces reality shows for Korean pop icons in Business of Media and a presentation on Korean business etiquette in Presentation  Skills.

She spent six weeks in Seoul taking language lessons at Yonsei University in the morning and interning at Chosun TV in the afternoon.  Shown above is a video that she made for Suffolk to document her days in Seoul.

Yaoyao got placed in the second level class where the teacher instructs in Korean only. Most students in her class were Korean Americans who would like to know about their heritage. Their class made a video called  “Where are our classmates?” (need to refresh the page if you see a blank screen) and won the Talents Prize.

Student receiving Jongha Student Scholarship Foundation

Suffolk has a student studying in Seoul, Korea this summer.  He is Neilson Lam, a business major specializing in management, who is at Yonsei University, one of our partner schools.

Neilson was awarded a scholarship from the Jongha Student Scholarship Foundation, established by the KCC Company, which has been giving scholarships to Suffolk students for the past four years.

In June Neilson arrived in Seoul to begin the summer term and received the scholarship money during a meeting at KCC Company.  Our congratulations to Neilson and our continued thanks to KCC.

Sukanya Ray’s collaboration with students

Sukanya Ray of the Psychology Department collaborated with two of her students (doctoral student Michelle Jackson and graduate student Danica Bybell) and published “International Students in the U.S.: Social and Psychological Adjustment” appeared in The Journal of International Students, Spring 2013 Vol. 3 Issue 1.

The study examines the role of self-esteem, hope, optimism, coping, acculturative stress, and social support on international students’ depressive symptoms and sociocultural adjustment. Seventy international students completed a self-report online survey. The most notable finding was that the international students used adaptive and maladaptive coping techniques at similar rates.

Greater use of coping techniques, higher acculturative stress and less social support were associated with more depressive symptoms and more difficulty with sociocultural adjustment. Lower self-esteem, less hope, and less optimism were associated with more depressive symptoms, but not sociocultural difficulty. Clinical implications and future directions are also discussed.

Da Zheng’s Silent Traveler now in Chinese

Da Zheng has just published the Chinese language version of his well-received 2010 book on Chiang Yee.  The Chinese language version is titled Xixing huaji: Jiang Yi zhuan 西行畫記: 蔣彝傳 (The Silent Traveler in the West: A Biography of  Chiang Yee) (Beijing, Commercial Press, 2013).

Chiang Yee (1903-1977 ) was a poet, painter, scholar, and an exile who lived most of his adult life in the West, principally in England and the United States. In his many publications and through his drawings, he captured the flavor of Western life as seen through an Asian sensibility.  Zheng’s new book begins with 16 plates, most in color, that serve as a visual introduction to the elegantly written text which follows. Other sketches and photos in black and white illustrate the text. Chiang’s poetry, translated in the English edition of Da’s book, is available here in the original Chinese version. The book’s publisher, the Commercial Press  (商務印書館) is one of China’s most established publishing houses.

Katie Sampson: from Nashua to Boston to Seoul to Kansas

Last year our Suffolk student Katharine Sampson spent the summer of 2012 in Seoul, Korea. She was on a scholarship granted by the Chongha Scholarship Foundation set up by the KCC Corporation in Seoul. Katie studied Korean at Yonsei University and had an internship at SBS Broadcasting, one of the major broadcasters in Korea.

Katie had been recommended by her professor Dana Rosengard, and through the work of the Rosenberg Institute and also of Professor Henry Kim of Economics, the scholarship and her summer internship were put in place.

Katie will be graduating this month and has accepted a position with the NBC station at Topeka, Kansas. Our congratulations to Katie.

In addition, she recently won two RAMMY awards for her reporting, which is the Department of Communication and Journalism’s annual student media award program.  Her feature news reporting RAMMY-winning piece also won top honors in the New England Associated Press/Radio Television Digital News Association competition.  Katie was also part of the award winning “Suffolk U News” team taking Top Student Newscast honors in the same annual competition.
