Ever since gas prices began to rise, people became concerned about increasing gas mileage. Companies are fighting to show who is better off at getting further at the lowest price possible. This issue has also motivated companies and engeneeres to develop the so called hybrid and electric cars. The fuel cell uses fuel hydrogen and oxygen from the air in order to produce energy while a hybrid car has a symbiotic relationship in its internal engine (as an example from fuel economy.gov ”The electric motor applies resistance to the drivetrain causing the wheels to slow down. In return, the energy from the wheels turns the motor, which functions as a generator, converting energy normally wasted during coasting and braking into electricity, which is stored in a battery until needed by the electric motor”.

One of the ways used by the automobile industry to increase gas mileage is to develop better cars. Nowadays in Boston, most of the taxies that we see in the street (toyota Camry as an example) are electric cars. These electric vehicles can be plugged into a power outlet in order to fill the power levels just like a regular gas-based car. When these vehicles come to a stop (in a traffic light) the engine shuts down to preserve energy, and when the driver hits the gas pedal ,the engine automatically turns on to continue its touring. Not only cab companies have these cars though, also car rentals and dealerships offer electric cars.

The government has also made a big impact in the car industry. For example, President Obama declared new rules and regulations for the automobile industry in order to promote an increase in the gas mileage, as an article in the NY Times says ”President Obama announced new automobile fuel-efficiency standards that require an average 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025”, The main standard was to increase the fuel economy to 54.5 miles per gallon for regular cars and small trucks by 2025. Achieving this goal is not going to be easy and it will required great deal of technology advances along with better ideas in order to create the perfect car. The same article also shows that these new standards are set to ” make consumers will save $1.7 trillion at the pump, $8K per vehicle by 2025”, and to create ”Incentives for electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and fuel cells vehicles; Incentives for advanced technology packages for large pickups, such as hybridization and other performance-based strategies;Credits for technologies with potential to achieve real-world CO2 reductions and fuel economy improvements that are not captured by the standards test procedures”. We can see in the commercials on TV nowadays how the car companies induce us to buy hybrids or electric vehicles.

    I had the same relationship with him that I have with
    John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.

    That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and
    Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s

    Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at the
    Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.

    In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the

    up his relationship with the Prime Minister.

    ‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said. 

    However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar
    Airways out of domestic routes.

    It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial Review
    columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

    Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy from
    Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them. 

    Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for

    According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome,
     London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.

    Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.    

    Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing
    Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr
    Joyce. 

    Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while
    holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.

    ‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the most important stakeholders
    in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be
    able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m not aware of anyone else having done
    it,’ Mr Dutton said.

    It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge

    The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday
    at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.

    ‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls
    – we discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he
    said.

    ‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’

    Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had
    made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.

    ‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

    Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying
    to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the decision.

    about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks.

    The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell. 

    ‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.

    ‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as a
    bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

    pushed the test-launch of its heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S.

    to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual forecast
    for the heated tobacco business.

    The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas,
    in the second quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.

    The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.

    Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes amid stricter
    regulations and falling smoking rates in some markets.

    The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States is also facing resistance from
    health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting past
    regulatory decisions, Reuters reported last week.

    The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
    Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects by the
    second half of 2025.

    A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has
    already hit shipments this year, with Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.

    This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated tobacco category to around 13% for
    the full year, down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.

    However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual sales and
    profit forecasts, betting on demand for

    and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to remove a single
    peppermint tree growing in the middle of their driveway.

    The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent,
    tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth’s Freshwater Bay for $20.1million in August.

    They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused the request on the grounds
    the tree was not dead or deceased. 

    ‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is unusual,’ Ms
    Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting. 

    ‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to
    reverse out.’

    The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last
    week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to
    be removed on the condition they paid a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the
    driveway.

    They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their property.
