President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) could be the motion needed to forge the United States into an even greater superpower. On July 6, President Trump submitted a formal resignation from the renowned global health partner, severing the connection of the U.S. from a valuable international resource. The WHO joins international powers surrounding universal health coverage, health emergencies, and the maintenance of well-being. During an international crisis such as the coronavirus, the WHO’s responsibility is to support member states by providing transparent information, thus yielding both swift response and recovery. In a CNN article by Zachary Cohen and co-writers, President Trump accused the WHO of “aiding China in allegedly covering up the origins of the virus and allowing its spread.” Many Americans may not agree with the decision to withdraw from the WHO since the U.S. would lose access to a variety of resources. In the midst of preparing for the U.S resigning its post in the WHO, there is still a silver lining. The world has seen valiant efforts in the wake of the coronavirus, efforts in which the United States can draw from. Across the ocean, the Republic of China (ROC), otherwise known as Taiwan, effectively controlled and managed its number of coronavirus cases without an established relation to or within the World Health Organization. If the ROC can be of any example to what the United States can become independent of the WHO, then the U.S. has the ability to thrive off medical technologies and supply productions within its own borders. Under a leader with comparable qualities as Tsai Ing-wen, President of Taiwan, the U.S. has an opportunity to strengthen and develop universal healthcare systems that ensure safety regardless of a global pandemic. Although the United States and Taiwan have vast differences in government, culture, and size of population, it is Taiwan’s response to the current pandemic that all countries can benefit from. In order for the U.S. to grow independent of the WHO, the current political climate of nations must be forgiven, if only for a moment, to better serve and protect the American people.
