Should students live on campus in the residence halls or live off campus in an apartment? My opinion is that students should live on campus. Research shows that living on campus is better for a student’s wellbeing, socialization, safety, and even their GPA.

According to research done by Penn State, students who live in dorms have higher grades than those who live off campus.

Yes! According to research done by Penn State, students who live in dorms have higher grades than those who live off campus. In addition, The University Star reports that on campus students are more likely to graduate than off-campus students, in part because it is easier to make study groups, stay focused on academics, and have more resources at hand. I understand that it appears more expensive to live in the dorm; however, the cost is balanced by having more support, such as Resident Assistants and Resident Directors, and in being in a more safe and secure environment.

And the cost of not graduating on time, or at all, is very costly. Apartment renters should also factor in the cost to commute, payment for utilities, and need to buy food into apartment costs, not to mention the possibility of not graduating, which makes the residence hall seem much more affordable – time is money too! — and living in the dorms is more convenient. So if you will be safer, have a better GPA, and graduate on time, living in the residence halls is worth it! I’d love to hear your opinion too; please comment below.
