"The Dreaded Discussion": 3 Ways to Start
Tuesday, March 4, 2025 | 12:00 - 12:30 PM, Online in Zoom
A challenge faced by educators throughout history has been engaging students in class discussion. Drawing on the 1982 classic by Peter Frederick, "The Dreaded Discussion: Ten Ways to Start," we will explore just three of his suggestions for creative ways to begin discussion in this 30-minute Small Teaching Lab. Like Frederick, we seek to “expand the range of our [discussion-generating] options by describing very precisely several different ways of starting a discussion.” General class discussion builds community, deepens students’ understanding of material, and gives them practice articulating and exploring their ideas.
