Psalms: 30-36 Questions

  • The place know as Sheol is mentioned in Psalm 30.3 I know that Jews do not believe in a “hell” per se, but what exactly is this place, and where else is it mentioned in the Old Testament. I am very curious about this.
  • On the right hand margin of Psalm 32, the word Selah is written a number of times. There wasn’t anything in the commentary below the page and I wanted to know what is means and stands for. I know in Hebrew, the word means a stone or rock, but i’m not sure how this really fits into the psalm..
  • In psalm 34.6 does “this poor soul” refer to David? From the description of the psalm, it talks about him. I just wanted to make certain if the quote was talking about him, or any general poor soul.
  • In psalm 33.10 what is “the counsel of the nations?”

Thats about it for now, any help would be appreciated 🙂

Exod. 31.18

“When God finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God”

Who – God, and Moses

Where – Mt. Sinai

When – After the Israelites were wandering the desert

What – The two tablets

The author’s intent in this quote is to remind the readers of the covenant God made with the Israelites, that if you follow these laws, I will make your generations after into great nations. Here we see that the tablets are written by the “finger of God.” This word choice makes God appear to be omnipotent, but human-like at the same time. While God may be a mystical being and we do not know what he looks like, we are given hints every know and then that he has human-like qualities, such as when he made Adam in his image and in Egypt when he took the Hebrews out with a mighty hand. This helps the audience to relate better with God.

Issues with the reading:

  • there is a lot of repetition, which can make you want  to skip or read ahead
  • some of the  character’s names are not specified, such as Pharaoh. We don’t know which Pharaoh he is.
  • the story jumps around frequently, which can be quite confusing at times
  • the lack of explanation can be frustrating, such as when Cain gets a wife, we do not know where she came from
  • women are not regarded highly and are known as being deceitful and tricksters
  • god is very spiteful and tends to give extreme punishments
