In different ways, Heather Dewey-Hagborg and Bang Wong both transcend the traditional division between science and art. Each uses data as a starting point and then employs tools and techniques from both the science and art realms in order to visualize that data. One place where they diverge is in the outcomes of their work. For Bang Wong, the outcome is essentially scientific: the results seek to explicate patterns and understand relationships in the data in order to make sense of complex systems. In the case of Heather Dewy-Hagborg’s Stranger Visions project, the result is essentially artistic: she uses a visual art piece to provoke thought and conversations about the role that DNA plays in our public interactions by creating an object. For Dewey-Hagborg and Wong, the boundary between science and art is fluid; and each is central to our understanding of the world.

Join Kate McLean for a Boston “Smell Walk” on August 7th

Experience Boston through your nose!

Kate McLean (Graphic Design 2004), Sensory Cartographer, invites you to join her on a smell walk of Boston as a part of her latest smell research project.

The walk will start at 7pm on Wednesday, August 7th at Haymarket and covers a distance of just over 2 miles finishing at Charles Street/Boston Common.

“The aim of this particular walk is the exploration of a series of one-dimensional maps of a smell journey through a city based on distance and time. I will be assessing how many smells we encounter on a single journey. I am interested to find out how each person perceives and describes the smells and their association with particular smells and aromas.

At key points I will stop and talk about smell expectations, how certain companies use fragrance for marketing, country-specific smells, and we will try to deconstruct some complex smells that have interested me for some time.”

Please email mcleankate@mac.com for further details or to sign up.

Professor Jen Fuchel in “A Glimpse Beyond”

Graphic Design professor, Jen Fuchel, participated in “A Glimpse Beyond” last weekend at the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. Her installation, “Settings,” plays with contextual expectations, shifting indoor objects outside. Through a collection of hanging frames, attention is called to works of nature, placing the natural world in a position often occupied by man-made art. With this work she seeks to challenge our perception of the nature of art and the art of nature.
