In this case, it was no just an epidemic, it was a pandemic which means it was global and travels worldwide. This movie was crazy. I am already a hypochondriac so while watching the movie and definitely after the movie, i couldnt touch anything or anyone. If i heard someone sneeze or cough or saw someone shakes hands with someone or kiss someone i cringed. That movie was very realistic and well made because it made it seem like it could really happen and i believe that something like that could actually happen.
There were a lot of big names in this movie and i think what made the beginning of the movie so powerful was that they killed off one of the big named actors in the first 20 minutes, Gwenyth Paltrow. I believe my experience with the movie was also different than anyone else that went to see it because i went to see this movie by myself and although i have gone to movies by myself before, it was extremely disturbing sitting there alone during this movie. Everytime someone coughed, moves, itched their arm, rubbed their eye, I jerked toward them as if they were spreading a disease at that exact moment.
I do believe an epidemic like this could happen however I also believe that people do not have the correct information. For example people think that eating red meat is horrible because they could potentially catch a disease HOWEVER if its good quality, the pinker the meat, the better for you. When they cook it well done, they cook all the nutrients out of it and only leave the fats and bad things about it so by trying to be healthy they are actually be less healthy.
Another example is that people refuse to touch lets say a railing because “everyone” has touched it so its “probably” full of diseases and grime. But what people don’t know is that dryer sheets you stick in with your clothes in the dryer are one of the most toxic things EVER for you and you can sincerely die from those.
Another example is that people think that “fat free” things and “no sugar” things and “low-carb/low Calorie” and “diet” things are better for you than the regular things but they are 10 times worse for you becuase they replace the real sugars with fake sugars and what would be sugar with rat poison and things that get in your blood and kill you. What people don not know is that real sugars are not bad for you, yes they might make you fatter but they are extremely healthy is comparison to things with the no sugar label on them.
It amazes me that people will cover their mouth when they sneeze but they won’t read the labels on things they are putting into thier bodies.
I also think its crazy to think that there are certain people like matt damon in the movie that cannot be affected by diseases like this because of something in their blood. What makes certain people immune to such a horrific contagious thing? Its crazy that all it took was a single bat and pig to cause all of this. The one thing i don’t understand is why didnt the big get infected by this, was it just the human connection that made the disease possible? so, if no one had ever touched the pig then no one would have gotten this disease? or was there something wrong with the bat or pig in the first place.
I do believe that there has to be a lot of things factoring into one situation for something like this to happen. I remember when H1N1 was the huge deal and the people got the shot and they started dying from the vaxination. It was crazy! but i was confident because believe it or not i have NEVER had a shot in my entire life. and you are probably saying to yourself “except for the one to get into schools and the flu shot” but NO, i have NEVER had a shot in my entire life, i have never had a needle stick into my skin. I do not believe in it and you know what? i am the healthiest person i know. I got perfect attendence awards when i was younger because i never got sick or missed school. I am very proud of it and i wish i could express to everyone not to get shots, because people are just pushing shit into your bodies to prevent something that you will never get! it makes no sense but people believe them and it blows my mind!
So in Conclusion, this can happen, im not sure if it will but people will panic and those you do will be gone first. I believe in epidemics and pandemics however people (americans mostly) are too stupid to take pre cautions…like when theres a small snow storm expected everyone runs to the grocery store as if they wont be able to leave their houses for weeks, when in fact there was only 4 inches of snow and it wa cleared off by the next day.
It’s interesting to see the impact a movie can have on an audience, especially given a subject as serious and probable as the disease in the movie Contagion. We have already experienced minor cases (in comparison to the infection in Contagion) of widespread disease in our country such a Mad Cow disease, Bird flu and Swine flu. Although neither cases have even come close to being as severe as the disease in Contagion, it is shocking to see what could happen in our country and to the world, if such a catastrophe were to evolve. Seeing the human race become outrageous with violence in an act for survival makes us question if there’s anyway to have control over something we have no notion of predicting. The people’s dependancy on answers from government officials and medical specialists shows us just how vulnerable we can be when our government can’t come through with solutions to control pandemics spreading faster than we can even communicate.
I really enjoyed reading this blog because i think your perspective on how people treat their health is refreshing and interesting. It is true that our society is obsessed with pills and prescriptions for every little thing they may need. Headache, back ache, inability to focus, fatigue, nausea, and basically every day issues that human beings are going to encounter every once in a while. This doesn’t mean that we need to pop a pill to fix it. Our bodies are built to fight off infections. Although it is true that sometimes there is just no way our body can produce immunity to certain diseases, especially unfamiliar ones such as a pandemic, it certainly does not justify the Americanized idea that we need a pill for every pain.
