About Dr. Poynton

I’m a school counselor by training and at heart, and dearly miss working with middle and high school students. Thankfully, I enjoy working with graduate students and preparing the next generation of school counselors just as much as working with adolescents!

I’m nearing the end of my fourth year at Suffolk University, and have been the program director since I started.

My research interests lie in technology, data-based decision making, and counselor education. Perhaps more specifically, I’m interested in learning how technology can close the theory-practice gap that exists in various areas of counselor education. Even more specifically, I’m looking into how technology is used to teach future educators the research skills they need to be effective in today’s educational climate, and how practitioners use technology to engage in data-based decision making. To these ends, I’ve developed a little program called EZAnalyze, which is a free ‘add in’ for Microsoft Excel that makes Excel easier to use for common analyses educators conduct.

If my research interests sound very boring, you should know that I am also very invested in ensuring that graduates of the Suffolk School Counseling program have the requisite counseling skills and knowledge they need to begin their work as school counselors. I don’t talk too much about my research in classes outside of my Action Research class…unless someone gets me going!

I’ll attach a CV here, if you are interested, or you can view my ‘official’ SU Bio.
