2014 Keynote Speakers:

Janice Gobert, WPI
Janice Gobert is an Associate Professor of Learning Sciences and Psychology in the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies and the Department of Computer Science. She is the Co-director of the Learning Sciences and Technologies Program. Her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (1994) is in Cognitive Science; her Masters is from McGill University, also in Cognitive Science. Her specialty is in technology-based with visualizations and simulations in scientific domains; her research areas are: intelligent tutoring systems for science, skill acquisition, performance assessment via log files, learning with visualizations, learner characteristics, and epistemology. Aligned with Post-Sputnik reform efforts for science education, the underlying philosophy of Dr. Gobert’s work is to promote equitable access to science for all. As such, her intelligent tutoring system is designed to adapt in real time to learners so that they can get individualized attention on the inquiry skills in science that they are lacking (www.slinq.org). Dr. Gobert & her group have two patent applications: one on assessment for inquiry skills in science using data mined algorithms, and one on an eye-tracking system that supports learners in the real-time acquisition of knowledge from text and graphics. From Sept 2000 to December 2007, Janice served as North American Editor for the International Journal of Science Education. She has been principal investigator on many projects (approx. 20 million dollars in external finding to date), which address technology-based science learning and assessment.
