Still Image Analysis

This first image is an icon – it is a visual depiction of student debt (a culmination of many people’s student debt as opposed to a single person’s debt statement). Its denotational meaning is that it is a depiction of America’s student debt crisis, showing the amount of money the nation’s students owe in sum. It depicts the amount that students have owed over the years, showing how student debt has risen in previous years compared to the past. It is a numerical representation of the monetary issue plaguing students today. It’s connotational meaning is that student debt has risen over the years, and is a national crisis – it is a certain issue if a group of a nation’s people (in this case, students) owe $1.5 trillion in debt. Its connotation is that student debt has increased over the years, and that this increase is an issue – an economic issue that plagues people of all age groups. The meanings of the narrative have not changed – student debt is a rising issue that seems insurmountable to pass, and it is not caused by bad decisions on an individual’s behalf. Rather, the meanings have become more clear and concrete: the reader is able to visually see the impact and amount of student debt, as opposed to listening to a single student’s financial troubles.

This second image is a symbol – it represents the feelings that people have in carrying around and dealing with student debt. The denotational meaning is that student debt is a weight that is holding people back from moving forward. Essentially people are held back, stuck, because of student debt. The connotational meaning is that student debt is a weight on people’s lives; it keeps them from moving forward towards life goals and achievements, towards a moving and growing future. With student debt depicted as a ball and chain, its connotational meaning is that students are like prisoners, trapped from societal achievements, and are rather punished for their choices (despite that choice being higher education). This does not change the meaning of the narrative; rather, it is a visual representation of how Eddy describes feeling with student debt. She said her debt is holding her back from owning a home, and trying to plan for a family – it is a weight that is holding her back from moving towards life goals. This symbol shows exactly that, exemplifying the meaning from Eddy’s narrative.

I will use this symbol as my background because it is very simple and understandable – a single image with a lot of weight behind its meaning.
