Hi everyone! My name is Eden, and I am a Junior studying Management and Environmental Studies. I got the chance to study abroad in the spring of 2023 at Suffolk’s Madrid Campus. Studying abroad was such an amazing experience; there are endless things that I could talk about in Madrid. But let’s start with what you clicked on this for… the cafes!
The average cup of coffee in Spain is around €2, one of the many benefits of living abroad. There is a wide range of cafes and coffee shops you can go to in Madrid, but here are some of my favorite ones.
The first café is called Green Coffee. Green Coffee is a little over a ten-minute walk from one of the residence halls, Galdos. (Metro: Cuarto Caminos, and Alvardo) The staff there are so welcoming and friendly to everyone who walks through the door. They are also patient with you if you are working on your Spanish, which I greatly appreciated at the start of my abroad experience. They have a basement area with free Wi-Fi, so if you ever want a place near the school to do your work and get a coffee, this a great option. They also make really fun coffee art designs!
The next cafe is my favorite; it is called FOUR Madrid. Four is a short walk from Plaza Mayor (Metro: Opera) and has a great atmosphere to do work, get lunch, or grab a quick coffee. It is a little more expensive than some of the other cafes, but it is worth it. Their avocado toast and scrambled eggs are unbelievable. If you’re not into avocado toast, the “cacio e pepe” scrambled eggs on a croissant areequally as delicious.
The last place is called Mazal Bagels and Café. Mazal is about a 25-minute bus ride or a 30-minute walk from Galdos (Metro: Alonso Cano). A little more out of the way than the other two, but it is 100% worth it. They have any kind of bagel you could want with anything on it that you want. Everyone there is incredibly nice, and the prices are very reasonable.
Honorable mention: This is not a café, but I have to put it on your radar. Amazonia Acai (Metro: Ibiza) has some of the best acai I have had. I ordered from them an embarrassing number of times. There are a few Amazonia Acai locations around Madrid, and they are all amazing. I highly recommend it if you like acai.
There are so many places to try in Madrid, and I encourage you all to try out as many cafes as you can. If you’re reading this and have any questions about studying abroad in Madrid or just in general, don’t hesitate to reach out by email (ebarletta@su.suffolk.edu).
