Traveling Cheap: Madrid Edition!
My name is Grace, I’m a senior public relations major at Suffolk, and I studied abroad at Suffolk’s Madrid campus in Spring 2022! I absolutely loved my time abroad and I encourage anyone to do it, so I hope that by sharing my experiences with you I can get you excited for your own journey!
First off, there was a long list of reasons I wanted to study abroad in college, and as I’m sure you can probably guess, one of them was that I wanted to travel as much as possible.
I can only speak from my experience in Madrid since the international airport was just a train ride away, but I found that traveling was easier and cheaper than it is in the U.S.
When I landed in Madrid in January 2022, it was the only European city I had been to. I was lucky enough to be a part of Global Gateway during my freshman year, so it was actually my second time in Madrid.
Some reasons travel is cheaper in Europe:
– Budget airlines
– Expansive train/metro systems
– Affordable economy in general (cheap food & souvenirs)
When my friends and I decided to take our first trip together, we were mind blown at the price of flights within Europe.
Some Flight Prices I Paid (in USD):
I traveled to 7 different countries and the average price for
my round-trip flights was around $100!
Here are some examples of flights I booked…
– $130 roundtrip to Vienna, Austria
– $50 roundtrip to London, UK
– $15 one-way from Athens to Rome
Get a Monthly Metro Pass in Madrid!
– 20 euros for unlimited subway rides each month (so worth it!)
– Made it so easy to get around and explore new places within Madrid
Whether you plan on jetting off to a new country every weekend or exploring the other cities in your study abroad destination, one of the great parts of studying abroad is how easy and affordable it is! Where will you go when you’re abroad?
