The best places to hike in Germany!

By: Steven Yu

Hi, my name is Steven Yu, and I am a sophomore studying criminal justice with a minor in business law. I studied abroad in Berlin, Germany, in the fall semester of 2023. It was a surreal experience for me to explore another country freely. One of my favorite things to do was going on long hikes either up the mountain or a hiking path. It can also be very chilly during the fall and winter weather.

While in Germany I have discovered many hiking paths and mountains that have very scenic views. Most of these hikes usually take more than 3 hours to complete but I think they are worth it.  While studying it can get stressful and I feel that doing these hikes will clear the mind or if you have free time on your hands and do not know what to do during the weekends hiking around Berlin will give you a fantastic way to connect with nature.

The first hike I recommend is the Eichwerder Moorwiesen trail. It is in the Oberhavel district in Berlin, Germany. The time of the hike is close to 3 hours from beginning to end. I enjoyed this trail because it leads into the countryside. From the start there isn’t that much scenic but once you get into the countryside there will be farms and a few animals to look at. After walking past the farms there are large open fields that you can walk through. You can get very good pictures and admire the scenic background.

The second hike I recommend is Ahrensfelder Berge. It is in the Marzahn district in Berlin, Germany. The time of the hike is fairly short, 30 to 40 min or so. I enjoyed this hike because it is at the top of the mountain peak. It tends to be a bit hard at the start because of the rocks but it gets easier when progressing further up the mountain. After you arrive at the top of the mountain there is a viewing deck to look at the building in the distance. There are also many places to take good photos.

The third hike I recommend is Muggelberge . It is located in the Treptow-Köpenick district in Berlin Germany. The time of the hike was about an hour and 20 minutes. I enjoyed the hike because of the scenic view when reaching the mountain peak. There were lots of logs and branches while going up the mountain so be careful climbing. When reaching the top there is a viewpoint where you can look at the entire forest and background. It is also a good place to take photos.
