Study Abroad in South Korea: Lost in Seoul (Pt.4)

Yeonsero (Yonsei University Street) (Seoul) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

Hi y’all, it’s Lena. I studied abroad at Yonsei University in South Korea in Spring of 2022. I’m back with another blog about the application process both at Suffolk and Yonsei. This blog is going to be long but hopefully it will help you with the application process. The application process includes Suffolk’s study abroad application, course selection form, and Yonsei’s application.

First Step: Study abroad application/course selection form for Yonsei University

  • Your course selection form must be completed, which requires you to pick 4-6 preferred courses and at least 4 alternative courses you plan on taking at Yonsei.
  • I recommend having as many courses as you can on the form so that you have options when registering.
  • Yonsei’s course catalog and your own program evaluation will be your best friends while completing the course evaluation.
  • All courses on your form must be approved by an Academic Advisor, so you have to make an appointment with them before uploading the form to your study abroad application and submitting it.

Second Step: You will receive emails from both Suffolk and Yonsei with a link and login to fill out the application

In the Yonsei application, there are many requirements but the most important to me was the enrollment letter because I had no idea how to get it.

  • To get your enrollment letter you will need to fill out the Enrollment Verification Form from the registrar’ office and submit it. Once submitted, you will get the letter and can attach it to your Yonsei Application.
  • After you then submit the Yonsei application, you will receive a confirmation email and instructions for the next step, which is to send a hard copy of your Certificate of Enrollment (Enrollment Verification Letter) and a Financial statement to the address they gave you.
  • Send this as soon as possible since it is going abroad and if it gets lost you want to make sure you have time to send it again.

Third Step: Make sure you click “commit” on Terra Dotta (the Suffolk study abroad application website), if you’re planning to go

  • For the next week or two, Yonsei will send emails regarding applications so please read them because you might need to make some changes.
  • One of the emails will be the dormitory application. If you plan to dorm, make sure to fill this as soon as possible because I heard that it fills very quickly.
  • There are some pros and cons about living in the dorm; a pro is that you won’t have to commute to school beside walking to your classes and a con is that it might be a small living space.
  • One thing I heard about the dorms is that walking to the dorm is rough because it is on a hill. On the other hand, there are many housing options outside of Yonsei like Airbnb.
  • I went with a group of friends so we booked an Airbnb with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen.

I hope this was a helpful blog and will be a useful tool for those who are planning or are going to study abroad in South Korea. There will be only two more blogs about different applications and then I will get into the fun stuff. The next blog will be about the visa and Alien Registration Card process.
