BLOG: Free day of shopping?

It’s a word college kids worship. Free. We’re all broke, have a lot of loans…there aren’t any on-campus events this weekend, so what are you to do?

I say, go down Newbury Street and to the Prudential center right off Newbury. To most, these locations mean ‘shopping’…but surprisingly, there are a lot of free things you can do as well.

Newbury Street

  • Visit any of the ice cream parlors…Just about all of them will offer free samples if you ask for them! (Have no shame, take a spoonful and walk out!)
  • Go to Lush Cosmetics…especially if you’ve never been there before. Tell an employee you’ve never been there and they’ll give you a tour. They also offer free samples, as well as a free hand treatment in-store!

Prudential Center

  • Visit Sephora – I’m totally guilty of going in there before a night out. You can “try on” all of the high-end makeup and perfumes in store, and even have a free consultation with one of their makeup artists. I recommend asking for either an “eye” look (eye primer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara) or a “face” look (primer, foundation, blush, bronzer, highlighter) from them…You’ll get professional application of products that will highlight all of your best features!
  • Visit Godiva and request to become a member of their “rewards program”. This glorious card will give you a free piece of chocolate – of your choice – every month, starting the second you sign up at the counter…it only means the occasional weekly email. To me, that’s worth it.
  • Go to Barnes & Noble and explore your favorite section. Personally, I love going in there and reading through entire books in the humor section with my friends…saving myself the $10-$20 it would have cost if I tried to purchase the books and read them at home.

…And…of course, window shop! Try on ridiculous outfits, run around in the furniture stores and plan your future homes. You can spend an entire day bonding with your friends and exploring the city without ever having to dish out a single penny.

Then…there are the free museums you can run around as well. At InstaRam, we love the arts. If you visit our Youtube page – http://www.youtube.com/user/InstaRamSU – you can check out our most recent visits to the Museum of Bad Art (free with purchase of movie ticket at the Somerville Movie Theatre) and to the Museum of Fine Arts (free with Suffolk ID!).

Check back tomorrow at noon to see a list of the museums and the discounted prices you can receive as a Suffolk student!

BLOG: Bored on Campus?

Your class is over.
It’s a miracle…you have no homework.
You’re ahead of the game!

…But your friends are in classes and you have so much time to kill before your next class. Also, it’s cold, and you do NOT want to stand outside.

You don’t feel like going back to your room and watching Netflix. You’re not hungry. You’re also way too antsy to just sit on your butt. What can you do?!

Here are some suggestions!

  • Go to the 4th floor of Donahue. I swear by this one. It’s foolproof. 9 times out of 10, there is some event going on in 403 (the big room to the right when you get off the elevators)…and it often involves free food.
  • Find the office for YOUR major. It blows my mind how many students do not know where this is. Explore and figure out where yours is. Then…hang out. Meet some people in your major. Who knows, perhaps hanging out in this area, you’ll end up being more successful in the future!
  • Navigate your way to NESAD. If you aren’t a NESAD student, this may be a real task. Once you find your way there, it feels like an accomplishment. Once you’re there, check out some of the art…it’s actually pretty remarkable…and very much free. It’s worth the trek, we promise.
  • Go to the library…and explore. I swear, nobody has ever touched a single one of those books. Want to see something cooler, though? The Emerson Library allows Suffolk students in with an ID…and there, you can see the actual Will & Grace set, as well as check out the scripts to some of your favorite movies.
  • Go to the Ridgeway gym. Yes, we have one! It’s on the 2nd floor of the Ridgeway building, and the machines are actually pretty high-tech. Some even have iPhone chargers! It’s a great place to get a little exercise, and maybe even study while you’re doing it!
  • READ US. Every Monday, we ship out a schedule of events going on each week. There is never NOTHING going on.

I’m an off-campus student, trust me. I am the Queen of this scenario. Suffolk has so much to offer than you realize.

Attention All Entertainers!

Hey Everyone!

Boston is becoming the set for more and more movies, commercials, and TV shows. You probably have come across film sets and stars casually around the city. Did you know that you have a chance to be a part of filming? You can be the one people in crowds are staring at when stalking the film sets!

There are an overwhelming amount of opportunities to be extras and to get auditions around the city. There are many great things about this including; portfolio building, it’s free, and you could be paid!

Most all of these places accept non-union actors and will send you notifications without a fully upgraded (aka pricey) account. Also, they don’t always look for actors, there are casts for singers, dancers, comedians, anything you can think of!

Boston Casting, CP Casting, and Sande Alessi Casting Boston are a few examples of agencies that provide information about upcoming events in the Boston area. You can create a profile with Boston and CP Casting for free and then you will receive email updates. These two groups also hold classes that can benefit your entertainment careers.

Sande Alessi Casting Boston is completely on Facebook and posts what they are looking for and an email address in which to contact if you are interested. This group also looks for more than just actors as in Casting Assistants, Personal Assistants, Production Assistants and other positions for non-actors.

Below are the links to each organization. Sign up today to get involved! I will also pass along information gathered from each agency as I receive it!

BLOG: We did it!

The first day of classes is over. Give yourself a pat on the back, a checkmark, a bagel, whatever you feel is appropriate.

We conquered.

While more of a hill than a mountain, it’s still an accomplishment.

What else will you conquer this semester?
