INTERVIEW: Danielle Ruff

INSTARAM: What is your major/year?
DANIELLE RUFF: Theatre Major PR Minor/Class of 2014

What activities are you involved in on and off campus?
RUFF: I’ve been heavily involved in the Theatre productions on Campus and The Modern Theatre. Off Campus I work as a street team member for Broadway in Boston, and an Ambassador for Blue Man Group. I like to stay busy, but someone I still manage to make some friends that can deal with that.
Danielle Ruff
How did you find your way around campus? What advice do you have for the incoming freshmen?
RUFF: I found my way around campus by asking upperclassmen who I had met at work study and by just exploring on my own. My advice: Do not be afraid to approach upperclassmen, this is not like high school. Also don’t be afraid to explore on your own, both on and off campus. I’ve had some of the coolest adventures exploring by myself.

What has been your greatest accomplishment at Suffolk?
RUFF: My greatest accomplishment thus far at Suffolk has to be…oh gosh I don’t even know. Probably Stage-Managing the Crucible. It was the biggest struggle ever and ultimately helped me to realize that I most certainly never want to Stage-Manage again. However, I did accomplish it and now I know to move on to something new.

Random Question: What is one song you are ashamed to admit you know every lyric to?
RUFF: Live While Were Young by One Direction or Tonight I’m getting over you by Carly Rae Jepsen

INTERVIEW: Dialis Molina

INSTARAM: What is your major/year?
DIALIS MOLINA: Public Relations, Junior

What activities are you involved in on and off campus?
MOLINA: Orientation Scholar, The Ramifications, The Journey program, Home Away from Home program arrival guide and cultural exchange partner, acting/modeling.

Dialis Molina

How did you find your way around campus? What advice do you have for the incoming freshmen?
MOLINA: The first day of classes I woke up extra early and had a map of the city with me to help me get to my classes on time. Orientation helped me get familiar with the buildings so I just had to get used to going from class to class. A piece of advice I have for freshmen is to not lose sight of who they are. College is a whole different ball game but just stay true to yourself and don’t fall into peer pressure.

What has been your greatest accomplishment at Suffolk?
MOLINA: My greatest accomplishment at Suffolk has been getting so involved, especially becoming an orientation leader. It helped me open up and become more confident and help incoming freshmen have the best freshmen year the can have.

What was the hardest lesson you learned when coming into college?
MOLINA: The hardest lesson I learned was that I’m really on my own. I’m from San Antonio Texas so coming to Boston was a big change for me. College is also very different than high school. No one is on your back about turning in assignments or going to class. It’s either you do what you came here to do of you’re throwing thousands of dollars down the drain.

Alex Pappas at Suffolk University’s Dayglow. He made us use this picture.

What activities are you involved in on and off campus?
PAPPAS: I’m a member of Sketchual Misconduct (the sketch comedy troupe on campus), and was in numerous Theatre Department productions.

What advice do you have for the incoming freshmen?
PAPPAS: Just be yourself, and people will respect that. Don’t be afraid to try new things, and get out and take advantage of what the city has to offer. Drink plenty of water

What has been your greatest accomplishment at Suffolk?
PAPPAS: It’s a tie between three…Getting cast in a production every semester (including a Boston Premiere and getting to work with Judy Braha), meeting Bill Murray at Ford Hall Forum, and performing at ImprovBoston with Sketchual Misconduct.

Random question – What’s one thing you can do that nobody at school knows about?
PAPPAS: Impressions. Lots of them.

INTERVIEW: Wil Ognibene

INSTARAM: What is your major/year?
WIL OGNIBENE: My major is History, and I just finished my Junior year. So I guess that makes me a senior.Wil Ognibene

What activities are you involved in on and off campus?
OGNIBENE: On Campus, I am the Treasurer of the Suffolk Ramifications a capella group, and I’m also an active member of the Video Gamer’s Army. Off campus, I work part time at Staples but mostly as a tour guide for the Freedom Trail Foundation. I dress up in colonial wear and walk people through history, it’s pretty fun!

How did you find your way around campus? What advice do you have for the incoming freshmen?
OGNIBENE: How did I find my way around campus? I walked around a lot. But it helps to do it with friends. And that’s the advice I always give to incoming freshman. Make friends, and the best way to do it? Getting involved. Now I know I sound exactly like a college admissions officer trying to convince you to come to school but getting involved is the best thing you can do. Why wait for friends to come to you when you can easily join a group of people who have the exact same interests as you. It’s easy and makes college so much more memorable.

What has been your greatest accomplishment at Suffolk?
OGNIBENE: My greatest accomplishment at Suffolk, I think, is currently in progress. I’m currently mostly in charge of the production of the Ramifications next CD. I say mostly because the rest of our leadership team is involved, but as treasurer I’m making most of the decisions at the moment. If you want my current greatest accomplishment though, it’s probably being inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, the history honors society. It’s always really nice to feel recognized for your accomplishments.

Random Question: What would you do if you had $1,000,000?
OGNIBENE: If I had a million dollars, I’d be lame, and pay off all my debts, and then put some in the bank, and then spend some more on going to any school I want to get my PhD in History. And then I’d be a scholar for the rest of my life and it’d be awesome because I’m weird and I like learning. That’s what I’d do. Now where’s my million?

Special thanks to Wil! If you happen to see him on the Freedom Trail – be sure to give him a shoutout!

INTERVIEW: James Helenski

INSTARAM: What is your major/year?
JAMES HELENSKI: Fine Arts major/Philosophy minor, Class of 2015

What activities are you involved in on and off campus?

James HelenskiHELENSKI: I am a trustee ambassador, so I give tours of Suffolk and NESAD. I am part of the Honors program. So far I have organized two pop-up shows at NESAD where anyone can come and display their work. There will be more to come in the future. And also this

summer I hope to start organizing a Suffolk University Vegetarian Society.

How did you find your way around campus? What advice do you have for the incoming freshmen?
HELENSKI: Well I come from Philly so I am used to being in the city. For me the easiest way to learn your way around is to just go for a walk. Not only do you start becoming familiar with the area but you find all the interesting hidden places that the city has to offer.

What has been your greatest accomplishment at Suffolk?
HELENSKI: I think my greatest accomplishment has been the organization of meetings between NESAD students and the administration to address concerns we all had and to propose solutions to certain problems. These meetings resulted in a whole new classroom opened up for the illustration department, a extra storage closet, and more storage within the studios as well.

Random Question: In your opinion – What is the worst video trend to hit Youtube?
HELENSKI: I don’t watch things on Youtube that often but I have heard that there is something going on where people are snorting condoms….

Special thank you to James! Keep coming back over the summer for more student features, courtesy of InstaRam!

INTERVIEW: Bobby Zupkofska

INSTARAM: What is your major/year?
BOBBY ZUPKOFSKA: Theatre Major/Junior

What activities are you involved in on and off campus?
ZUPKOFSKA: Activity wise, I involve myself in all things theatrical; I am such a performer and have a deep passion for theatre. I have been heavily involved with most Theatre Department and PAO productions. Just this last semester I was the Assistant Stage Manager for Avenue Q, The Dramaturge for The Crucible and Run Crew for Voices for Now, and on top of all of that, I’ve been involved with a 10th Anniversary Concert version of Les Misérables at my former High School. And that is just last semester! I haven’t been as heavily involved off campus, although last spring, I did The Wedding Singer Musical at the Company Theatre which ran for four weekends; it was so much fun but pretty intense considering I was also balancing the second half of my freshman year. Other than that I take vocal lessons from the amazing Gina Beck, which may not seem like an activity but I have fun, mainly because I love to sing. I am basically the stereotypical theatre kid!Bobby Zupkofska

How did you find your way around campus? What advice do you have for the incoming freshmen?
ZUPKOFSKA: I have to thank the Theatre Department for helping me find my way around and adjusting to College life. Everyone in the Department is so approachable and willing to help you out and they definitely helped me adjust to the new area and deal with all the troubles I was dealing with at the time. My job as, what I call, “The Head Usher” also helped me adjust; I see so many faces for all the events I work at and build strong working relationships with my peers, which helped me make friends my freshman year. I also get to meet the people who make all these events happen and build a connection with them too, which is just as great.
My advice for freshmen: Get Involved. Be Ambitious. I always think of myself as an ambitious person but, looking back on it, I felt I should’ve done this and that but never did. So I definitely advice all freshmen to do whatever you love to do. Don’t think: “well I’m just a freshman…” be ambitious! Don’t have second thoughts about joining an organization, or auditioning for a show because that’s the best way to make friends especially if you’re doing what you love to do.

What has been your greatest accomplishment at Suffolk?
ZUPKOFSKA: I would have to say my greatest accomplishment was playing the role of Hyllus in These Seven Sicknesses. Usually when I’m in a play I think: “I’m a better singer than an actor” but not this time! I felt really confident in my acting ability and I proved to my biggest critic (me) that I really got what it takes to be an actor. I also must add that being the ASM for Avenue Q was also a big accomplishment. I went into the show knowing very little about my position and came out really enjoying stage management. Both these accomplishments were definitely my greatest achievements for the fall and spring semesters this past school year.

Random Question: If you were ruler of a country, what would you call it?
ZUPKOFSKA: I LOVE this question! Everyone who knows me knows that I am completely obsessed with the musical Evita and the woman behind it, Eva Perón. I would definitely rule my country in the style of Eva Perón and I would call it “The New Argentina” after my favorite song in the musical “A New Argentina.” I can just see myself belting out all of Eva’s big numbers in the show to my Descamisados; it’s like my weird fantasy.

Thank you Bobby! Stay tuned for more InstaRam features over the summer – we love to feature our fellow students!

Musical Theatre: A Word to the Less-Wise

So, being the fantastic daughter that I am, I had my father buy my mother and I tickets to the Sound of Music at North Shore Music Theatre. I know, I’m pretty wonderful.

Anyhoo, I have been to NSMT several times, but this time in particular was different. Maybe, with my increased involvement in theatre over the past two years I am hyper aware of everything now, but I observed a large amount of absurd behavior at today’s performance. This entry will be similar to one I made previously about my trip to Symphony Hall (How to Appear High Society at the Orchestra). HERE WE GO.

OH, before beginning, general note, NSMT is a theatre in the round (a round stage, the aisles in the audience are used to get on and off the stage…which is round)

So when attending a musical there is much, as one would expect…music. Some musicals, like the Sound of Music, are also movies and therefore the songs are extremely well known. This does not mean, however, that you are free to sing along. At any point. Unless you see a screen with a bouncing ball over the words being sung, purchasing a ticket or considering yourself a connoisseur of the arts does NOT make you a performer. No one else paid their way past an audition to be a part of this show…..this is Beverly….not New York.

NEXT.

Oh man, this is life advice. If you have glasses that have sunglass lens attached to them that you flip up when you’re not outside…stop. At LEAST, don’t sit in the front row at a theatre in the round, cause we can all see you. Woof.

Moving right along…

This entire next section is inspired by the elderly. I hate to generalize, but generally this only applies to the senior citizens. If you feel discriminated against and feel the following applies to you and you are not collecting Social Security…I wouldn’t tell anyone.

When speaking during the show, don’t. I understand, it is hard, you are a very witty person with comments to make, or you understand what is happening in the show and feel the need to educate others who probably don’t understand the somewhat simplistic storyline of the Sound of Music. But TRUST ME, No. One. Cares. People paid for the performance, not the commentary. Most importantly, do NOT speak to your hard of hearing wife in the middle of dialogue. The lovely elderly fellow behind me felt the need to respond to every one of his wife’s “WHAT DID YOU SAY?!” with repetition at a greater decibel. No sir. NO.

When being fitted for your dentures, please make sure there is no room to shift them with your tongue. The suckling noise that is made as a result is a disturbance to others. I almost vomited.

***End of Elderly Generalizations***

Now are some rules for audience members/actors/theatre staff/show crew based on events that took place today:

1. Audience: When the lights are on on an aisle for a theatre in the round, do not use that aisle to take your bathroom break. Actors are about to exit/enter the stage and you will be run down. Also, THAT’S WHAT AN INTERMISSION IS FOR. Good Lord.

2. Actor: When exiting a stage on steps, be sure not to step on the habit of the nun in front of you, it will frighten and possibly injure her.

3. Ushers: When there are several exit doors, some leading to the lobby and others to nature, stand in front of the ones that lead directly outside so unsuspecting audience members don’t light up the theatre.

4. Stage Management: When there is an actress in a dress on stage and the zipper to that dress is broken resulting in the exposure of her entire back including bra strap, let appropriate people know to give the next logical actor entering the stage a shawl in which to wrap her. Otherwise, this is all remedial audience members focus on.

5. Audience: When the conductor raises his baton in your view, it is for the actors. This action does not take place for the Maestro to conduct your orchestra of coughing.

FINALLY. The most kick-ass (in regards to theatre etiquette) situation occurred today. The man next to me was a cougher. Every 4 minutes, he expelled air through is mouth in a loud manner. Typically, those sitting in the front seats are subscribers and attend every show. The two men sitting in front of us were those people. Before the end of intermission, one man turned around, looked at coughing man and said, “Here you go, just in case” and handed him a cough drop. I CAN’T EVEN SAY ANYTHING TO THAT. IT WAS A FREAKING AUDRA MCDONALD MIC DROP!!! Greatest moment ever.

I hope this entry serves the public well, as it is to benefit the greater good. You’re welcome world.

INTERVIEW: Jake Athyal

INSTARAM: What is your major/year?
JAKE ATHYAL: Communication Journalism/ Theatre Major, Class of 2014

What activities are you involved in on and off campus?
ATHYAL: I’ve acted in 4 professional productions, 14 Suffolk productions, am the President of the Techies Union, am a member of the Suffolk Forensics team, danced in Suffolk’s Bhangra Dance team, am a New England qualified Mixed Martial Artist, work as a massage therapist on weekends and as an actor at the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum.Jake Athyal

How did you find your way around campus? What advice do you have for the incoming freshmen?
ATHYAL: One of the best things about SU is that it’s only going to be as beneficial, productive and fruitful as you want it to be. You have the option of going to class, heading back home and playing video games all day. Or you could join one of our many dance or music groups, get on Suffolk Radio, write for a Suffolk newspaper, get on NECN (Suffolk in the City), be an orientation leader, join the improv or sketch team, anything. If you don’t find somewhere you feel you fit, start a group of your own. Yeah, that’s an option.

What has been your greatest accomplishment at Suffolk?
ATHYAL: Campus Cutie.

(This interview can be viewed at http://www.hercampus.com/school/suffolk/campus-cutie-jake-athyal)

Random Question: As a former campus cutie, who is YOUR biggest campus crush, and why?
ATHYAL: Campus wise? Too many. There are so many people here who have blown me away. Professors like Wes Savick, Caitlin Langstaff, Richard Chambers, Soshana Madmoni and so many more who seem to blow my mind almost on a daily basis. Almost casually. The don’t brainwash, they don’t convert, they don’t influence. They force you to reason and rationalize for yourself. I find that level of culture and cultivation irresistible.

INTERVIEW: Anna Martel

INSTARAM: What is your major/year?
ANNA MARTEL: Theatre Performance, Junior

What activities are you involved in on and off campus?
MARTEL: If I’m not working on a performance class, I’m learning how to tech a show, build a prop, or learning a new monologue for upcoming auditions. I work in a computer lab and use the free time sitting there at a computer signing people in to look up techniques and theatre performances for inspiration.

How did you find your way around campus? What advice do you have for the incoming freshmen?
MARTEL: I learned the campus by repetition, the more you go out and walk around, the more comfortable you’ll become with the area. I liked to think of it asAnna Martel 10 West and 150 Tremont are the furthest out, in the middle you have Miller, 73 Tremont and Sawyer, and down behind the state house you have Archer, Fenton, and Donahue.

My advice to the freshman coming in would be to not be afraid to ask directions of the security guards in your building if you’re unsure where your class might be, and to get out of the dorms on the weekends and explore Boston. Your freshman year goes fast, and each year only goes by faster. Get out there and experience it all.

What has been your greatest accomplishment at Suffolk?
MARTEL: To me, the proudest moment I’ve had at Suffolk was my directing final this year, where I had to put together a performance piece together from scratch. Write it, figure out the cast, rehearse them, get props, and get set, light and sound figured out. It was incredible to be involved in so many aspects of theatre. You can see the finished piece here on Youtube : The Last White Bird
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=5i9rfUwVNiU )

Random: Tell us your favorite joke!
MARTEL: Suffolk and Emerson have a kind of rivalry when it comes to theatre, and one of the best jokes I’ve ever heard about Emerson was this : How many Emerson students, does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
…….
Give up!?
…….
21! One to screw in the light bulb, and 20 to be holding the ladder and grumbling “That should be me up there!!”

Stay tuned for more student interviews! We’re extremely proud of our students and the remarkable things they accomplish. Thank you Anna for your time, we can’t wait to see what she does next!

INTERVIEW: Anthony Mangini

InstaRam: What is your major/year?
ANTHONY MANGINI: Media Studies/ JuniorAnthony Mangini

What activities are you involved in on and off campus?
MANGINI: I’m in the WSUB Video Production Club, and I also work in the Ridgeway Media Lab.

How did you find your way around campus? What advice do you have for the incoming freshmen?
MANGINI: Just exploring around was a good way to find cool places. I recommend having some sort of an idea of what you want to do and try and meet some of the professors in that field. The actual Advisors aren’t necessarily the best for your exact field.

What has been your greatest accomplishment at Suffolk?
MANGINI: My greatest accomplishment at Suffolk was probably winning three “Rammy Awards” one for Black and White Photography, one for Color Photography, and one for Spor News Photography.

Random Question: What is the worst part of your typical day? The best?
MANGINI: Worst part of my day? I try not to have a specifically scheduled bad part of my every day day. But I mean, always getting out of bed it usually trouble. Best Part of my day is probably just getting back to my room after a long day and hanging out with my roommates and friends.
