Mexico stands as the eighth country in the world with the most significant number of Covid-19 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Mexico has conducted the lowest testing rates among Organizations for Economic Co-operation and Development Countries. This supports experts’ hypothesis that the quantity of infections and deaths could be twice as high than what is being reported.

Regardless of the fact that Mexico was under strict lockdown measures, crowded transport systems and a vast majority of markets and street food stands remained open. In June, Mexico began to ease quarantine restrictions allowing more than 340,000 citizens to go back to work even though infection rates were rising at a rapid speed.
Health experts fear that reopening the economy while the disease is not under control will lead to more illness and deaths. Unfortunately, low and middle income citizens are unable comply to follow quarantine restrictions since they are employed in the informal economy and have no federal unemployment benefits.

Mexico’s President, Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, has encountered intense criticism for its careless and untrustworthy response to the Covid-19 outbreak. The President has argued he wished to avoid the economic fallout associated with the lockdowns, which would disproportionately affect the country’s poor, his base.
Before the coronavirus outbreak, Mexico was encountering with a stagnant economic growth. The country was struggling with monetary devaluation, a lack of international investment trust, and an increase in inflation. During this pandemic, millions of low and middle income citizens are falling behind on loans, domestic violence has increased over thirty percent, and unemployment rates are rising.
In conclusion, the majority of Mexico’s inhabitants cannot comply with quarantine restrictions because of their economic needs. Lopez Obrador’s careless response has caused a lack of transparency that challenges to flatten the curve of infections. Authorities should now concentrate on developing effective training mechanisms that focus on rebuilding the scope of government responsibilities by setting economic and social goals. Otherwise, economic inadequacies will lead to a steeper increase in the country’s social inequality causing more insecurity among communities.

The comment you made about domestic abuse rising made me want to bring up some things I have learned about it too. UN declared it as a ‘shadow pandemic’ according to BBC, which I find quite terrifying. This also brings in an idea that my class has spoken about: intersectionality. We discussed that one’s identity can play into an array of factors that may disadvantage them. For example, in the US, minorities and low-income families are getting hit hardest by the pandemic. These are the same people that are largely dealing with the domestic abuse problem, as unemployment and pay cuts play into domestic tensions and can result in violence. It may be no fault of their own, yet their racial identity, neighborhood, gender, and class all played a role in making the pandemic hit harder.
