Crime in America During Covid-19

Being in quarantine has caused an uptick in crime. We’ve been in quarantine since March of 2020. Many people have never experienced this type of isolation in their lives. Think about it, not leaving your house, not socializing, your children not being able to attend school. This has definitely brought tension in households. All you have to do is turn on the news, all you’ll see is violence, such as homicides, robberies, assaults, and domestic violence.  I can’t help but feel that the Covid-19 pandemic and the regulations associated with it, such as,  the closing of businesses, parks and recreation facilities, schools, and most importantly the public being quarantined in our homes, are the main contributors to the uptick in crime. 

   Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins said, “she is concerned about a recent uptick in gun violence in Boston, and also about domestic violence cases while Massachusetts residents are asked to stay at home during the coronavirus pandemic.” 

   Recent studies on crime durning Covid-19 show that there are more homicides than previous years.  Looking at Picture 1,  you can see how the 2020 weekly homicide rates increased.

If you look at another chart, (Picture 2)  it shows that a decrease in assaults with a firearm in March 2019,  and an increase in July 2020 proves my point, as well as DA Rollin’s point,  that gun violence did rise durning the height of Covid-19.

Child Abuse and neglect have also been prevailing during Covid-19.  According to Leonard Carollo, chief of the FBI’s Crimes Against Children and Human Trafficking Unit, “The FBI has seen more than 300 of these incidents in the last three months”  

Other sources say the abuse is worse than usual. Kids are admitted to hospitals with more severe injuries. “Several advocates and pediatricians who specialize in child abuse say they are seeing an increase in the number of abused children who need to be hospitalized.” 

As we get through this pandemic and approach the fall where a second wave is being predicted by the medical professionals, I hope that we can somehow find a way to get people the help they need, whether they are a victim of crime, or they are having a tough time emotionally or physically. Helping them seek treatment should be part of a plan for the phases each state is implementing as we work our way through this pandemic.

  1. I found this topic very interesting because everyone has been looking at economical things during covid but no one is monitoring crime. There has been a lot more violence with covid 19 and BLM going on at the same time. Studies also showed that homicides were higher than normal. Why do you think this is happening? Children are also getting more abused by being home, do you think with everything opening back up, those numbers will go down or no because kids cant go to school?

  2. Thank you for writing on this topic! The physiological impact of quarantine and drastically changed daily schedules is so fascinating. I would love to learn how those issues would relate to the increased violence in homes as well as in society. During early stages in COVID there were images going in the news that showed long lines outside gun shops. Perhaps the increased purchase of guns relates to the rise in gun violence in communities. It will be interesting to see what types of preventative and protective measures will be put in place to protect individuals, who have to stay at home, in the raising child abuse and domestic violence cases.

  3. I recently read an article stating that with the economic downturn caused by the pandemic, as we begin to recover there will be more crime in major cities. Analysts are comparing the crime rate now to the severity of crime within the Great Depression and are saying that the homicide rate will only increase within the coming months. It is especially interesting to see how the police force will respond to the increase of crime with protests calling for police reform. I hope that with the increase in crime, comes the desire for the police force to evolve into one with more training and less tolerance for police brutality and systemic racism.

  4. It really is crazy how much a pandemic can change things! I feel like this topic is one of those weird changes! For instance, at my job we keep having more and more items stolen, and it’s such a weird time. But I feel like the question is why is the crime growing so much? Is it the political situation? Or maybe because of all the lost jobs? Or because everyone is supposed to wear a mask which makes it hard to identify someone? I feel like since everyone is wearing masks that people believe they can get away with more now. But I also feel like part of the crime is a way of “sticking it to the man” in this hard time.
