California used to be a nationwide leader against the coronavirus. Now, it’s one of the most ravaged areas in the country.

California is one of many states to have lost over 5,000 lives to the coronavirus.

Despite a timely and impactful initial response to the coronavirus pandemic, California is seeing its number of cases and amount of deaths skyrocket.

On March 4, 2020, a little over a month after the first cases of COVID-19 in America were recorded, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency, releasing funding and resources for millions of medical ventilators and masks, as well as activating all levels of government against the threat of the foreign disease. Soon after, California issued the first stay-at-home order in the nation on March 19, shutting down non-essential businesses and insisting on individual quarantine. These measures were the start of a robust response to the coronavirus pandemic that had surpassed any state-level plans thus far during the pandemic.

But despite all these initial efforts, California has amassed a record 550,000 cases of COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic. What could have gone wrong?

Several months into the pandemic, states across the country received public pressure to reopen certain sectors of the American economy and social centers. On May 18th, Governor Newsom released a statement saying that state health officials would relax guidelines for individual counties within California to reopen, as cases in the state seemed to have dropped off. As economic centers and gathering sites reopened, the virus once again took grip of the population-dense cities (Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, etc.) throughout the state.

In addition, the online infrastructure of California’s healthcare system was ill-equipped to handle the mass influx of testing data over the past few months. Californian health officials have warned that the coronavirus testing information received from over 300,000 individuals may be backlogged, due to technical errors and server lag, leading to a potential spike in reported cases within counties.

Half a million confirmed cases of this deadly virus – which has accelerated greatly since the reopening process began – has unsurprisingly made a significant impact on the California state government. Since the uptick, Governor Newsom issued a statewide mask mandate within public and high-risk locations. Similarly, restrictions on high-risk locations such as movie theatres, stadiums, and restaurants have tightened, requiring strict procedures for operation.

The virus continues to spread, however, with thousands of new cases and hundreds of deaths per day. The public still craves a return to normalcy, but the haste to achieve that goal has led to grave consequences for the United States’ most populous territory.
