Why We Should Vote in a “Rigged Election”

Whether it be international conflict or issues that we face in our homeland, US history books record many tumultuous experiences that have oftentimes left Americans uncertain for our future.

Throughout history, we have been able to overcome these obstacles or national tragedies by utilizing the freedoms granted to us in our Constitution, and as we faced these challenges in the past, there has always been the consolation that democracy could give us the power to steer us in the right direction.

However, as the coronavirus pandemic surges on, there is a looming threat that could potentially derive us of the freedoms granted to us as American citizens.

With the presidential election date approaching, there has been much debate surrounding mail in elections and with opinions split across party lines, it becomes harder and harder to find middle ground on this issue.

A large portion of this uncertainty stems from President Trump’s increased criticism of the mail in ballot. Most recently Trump has stated that mail in ballots will create a “rigged election.”

It seems even though Trump has repeatedly criticized this election, no one is asking the President: “What if you win?”

With only 13% of Americans saying that they are satisfied with the federal coronavirus response, things aren’t looking too good for the Trump campaign. Despite this, it is important to ask the question: will this election have more verity if it reelects Trump?

There are many variables that contribute to determining the President, and with unpredictable factors like the coronavirus, economic uncertainty, and civil unrest as well as faithless electors and a mail in ballot, the 2020 presidential election will be undoubtably historic.

What is important now more than ever, is that people understand the need to vote in this election. Even though with the uncertainty of this election our vote may seem insignificant, that is far from the truth. Despite juxtaposing political views or contrasting beliefs and ideologies, it is important to use our vote as an opportunity to create positive change not just for ourselves but for all American citizens.
