With the new COVID-19 Pandemic during the continuous fast food epidemic, why should fast food restaurants stay open when they put minorities at a greater risk?

African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to be obese as Public health problems and poverty becomes more prevalent in minority communities than their counterparts. Fast food causes underlying conditions such as, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. People in the low-income neighborhoods have 2.5 times more exposure to fast-food restaurants than those living in the most affluent neighborhoods (Block, 2007).  

President Nixon set out programs that provided federal funding to fast food franchises, by assisting Black-Owned businesses in serving fast food through promotion of spiritual entrepreneurship, in 1968. The federal subsidization of chains promoted Black Capitalism, making a group of Black Entrepreneurs wealthy, but was a boon to introduce the fast food industry to other markers. The Minority Business Enterprise in 1969, extended $65 million in federal money to expand franchises into low income neighborhoods. By using programs such as, The Small Business Administration gave out thousands of loans in the early 1970s to Black Entrepreneurs …this resulted an increase from 405 minority franchise in 1969 to 2,453 in 1973. The government saw the franchisee system used policies by creating programs with a set agenda on what kind of businesses they wanted to open the community to (Holleran, 2017). 

As the access to Fast Food began to increase in neighborhoods the decrease in healthier foods became prevalent, as it became harder to access. The data down below shows how neighborhoods with 80% Black residents have 2.4 fast food restaurants per square mile verse their counterparts, 1.5 restaurant per mile with neighborhoods, housing only 20% of Minorities. Therefore, predominantly Black neighborhoods are exposed 6 times more than white neighborhoods (Block, 2007). 

A weight-inclusive registered dietitian in New York, Fatima Fakhoury reported that a colleague in Cornell’s surgical intensive-care unit found every one of her 60 ventilated patients in one day, was obese (Miller, 2020). Which is a result of systematical racism, the Brox is 62% full of fast food restaurants as children diabetes is skyrocketing. The fast food market was created by cooperation’s to increase market share (Holleran, 2017). A report made by the CDC on April 8th, found 48.3% off patients across the U.S, were obese and 59% of the patients were 18 to 49 years old who were hospitalized. Which is alarming considering that 20 to 39-year old of the U.S is obese. Reports in U.K show that 127 of 196 coronavirus patients in the intensive care unit, were obese. The rising obesity levels across the U.S was warned by public health researches for decades, fueled by poverty and lack of access to healthcare. Consequently, shown in the rise in rates of Americans with heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension caused by obesity, connected to serious COVID-19 complications.  COVID-19 may worsen because viruses thrive on compromised immune systems, weaken the body’s anti-inflammatory response, higher blood glucose levels, and lung function which are common side effects of obesity (Miller, 2020). 

Fast food restaurants in the end do more hurt long-term health wise than good, which is why they shouldn’t be open. In order to protect themselves, obese people need to practice the same CDC guidelines and same State restrictions as everyone else. Eating a healthy diet with some outdoor exercising, prioritizing sleep, and stress management will help you slow the risk of COVID-19. What you should not do is overly diet and exercise, which can weaken the immune system (Miller, 2020).

  1. Your argument furthered my analysis that during these hard times, low-income families and minorities are struggling more than ever. They are put at greater risk and it is true that those neighborhoods have 2.5 times more exposure to a fast-food restaurant because they aren’t rich, they can’t have the luxury of eating at expensive restaurants. A question I have for you is that you said that food restaurants, in the end, do more hurt long-term health-wise than good, which is why they shouldn’t be open. How can low-income families and minorities get access to these because all they’re used to is fast-food chains in their community? Most of them even hold jobs in the fast-food industry and all they’re exposed to is fast food. It might not be their ideal job, but do you really think they want to be working in an industry where they get paid at a low wage and have to deal with rude customers all day? They’re working to provide for their family and be able to afford necessities. What is another alternative that can be done to help families like these?

    • These families can only afford what they are given, by removing fast food restaurants and replacing them with healthier options with higher wages, minorities are given a chance. Minorities are used to fast food because its surrounding them, they actually consume more vegetables and fruits than their counter parts and yet are paying the price the most.

  2. This blog post highlights yet another way that minority populations are suffering disproportionately from the COVID-19 pandemic. It seems that in almost all aspects of pandemic life, minorities are hit the hardest. However, I disagree with your view that fast food restaurants should not be open (I’m not sure if you mean only during the pandemic, or at all). If you’re referring to these chains being “essential businesses” during the pandemic, I think that having these restaurants close their doors would be even more detrimental to the economy. Since there’s not much else to do, many people are treating themselves to take out, and that’s a great way to stimulate the economy a little during these rough times. Further, this would put many people, especially minorities, out of work. And if you’re referring to fast food chains being closed indefinitely, then I think that a sustainable solution for affordable, healthy meals must be found first, as the main reason that many minorities turn to fast food is because it is cheap and accessible.

Why would you keep fast food chains open when they are exposing minorities to heart disease, obesity, and diabetes which ate underlying conditions that are killing people faster who are infected by covid-19? If you were thinking about that economy then you would know that the money spent on fast food would go to local businesses and super markets. Minorities do not need fast food restaurants, they need higher wages and healthier affordable eating places. Minorities consume twice as much fruits and vegetables than their counter parts, yet your telling me fast food is not the reason they are unhealthy? They are constantly being surrounded and left with no other option, industrialized food should not be an option.

  4. Health issues inherent in having a fast-food-chain-based diet have constituted a risk to minority communities for decades. I would argue that the real risk with fast food chains and minorities due to the pandemic stems from the fact that in addition to the health issues they are prone to have due to their diet, minority food workers are working in already unsanitary conditions aggravated due to the risk of infection. Fast food workers find it hard to practice social distancing since they are crammed in a small kitchen which is not cleaned in a general nor appropriate manner during the workday and may not have access to PPE. However, closing fast food restaurants might hurt minorities even more, since it means taking away the only way they have to support themselves and their families. Hold fast food chains accountable and assure they are guaranteeing customer and employee safety in upholding health safety standards not only in the dining area, but in the kitchen as well.
