Schools VS COVID-19

In a regular year, students would be cramming their summer schoolwork in the last weeks of August; however, this year students, families, and faculty still do not know their school’s regulations regarding COVID-19. Has there been progress in COVID-19 regulations in schools and what are they, especially in Massachusetts and New York? On August 10th, 2020, Massachusetts schools were tasked to present their plans for reopening. The Department of Education has ensured schools will be required to provide supplies like gloves, hand sanitizer, and masks. However, the Department of Education has extended that deadline until August 14th. The Commissioner of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Jeffrey Riley, states that the Department has reviewed over 516 reopening plans from schools. Not only does the Department ask for the regulation plans regarding the everyday interactions inside the building, but also the Department ask for any different transportation methods, which include drop off and pick up options. However, Brockton, Somerville, and other school districts have decided to automatically start the new school year through online classes.  

As COVID-19 infection rates continue to decrease in New York, optimism rises that schools will safely reopen on September 10th. Unfortunately, the Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has run into a few problems with their reopening plans. Schools desire to have nurses at the schools; however, there is a shortage of nurses, meaning not every school would have a nurse available in case of an emergency. Not only is there a shortage of nurses, but there may also be a shortage of teachers that would be available to teach in the classes. Governor Andrew Cuomo has stated that Bill de Blasio’s plan is not yet complete. The reason why Governor Cuomo stated this is because the teacher union has threatened to sue over the reopening plans. Governor Cuomo will want to avoid an issue like this since Chicago’s teacher union created a strike over the COVID-19 regulations. New York can offer a reopening plan that can not only help the other school districts in New York but also the country. The Empire State can offer a reopening plan to the other states since the infection rates are lower compared to other states. New York can create a template for reopening in particular districts where COVID-19 has not affected the area critically.

I find it interesting that the state of Massachusetts is having each school come up with a plan for reopening because with over 500 schools, it seems impossible and unreasonable to have all those plan fit all the new regulations. What about the schools in the Malden area, where they just had their first confirmed case of the West Nile virus? How will schools put that into consideration as well as all the covid-19 regulations?

    I also never thought about the lack of school nurses that would be available for schools. It would be insane to have schools open for students in the fall and not have at least 1 nurse per a school. Sending students to school without someone who has medical training is irresponsible especially during a pandemic. Are there ways for people to help with training so that we have more nurses during the shortage?

    • I also failed to consider that schools could have insufficient nurse coverage. It’s insanity to start classes in the autumn without assigning at least one nurse to each school. In the midst of a pandemic, it would be inappropriate to send children to school without at least one super mario bros adult there who is a trained medical professional. How can the public assist with training to alleviate the current nurse shortage?
