It is well known that the pandemic caused by COVID-19 had caused  millions of people to be stuck at home. While some take this as an opportunity to reflect on themselves, spend time with close family, or even spend it with a new furry friend.

This time isn’t so great for all of us. Staying inside for some people is not as easy as it looks. Some people fear staying indoors. What is the main reason you ask? Because the cold hard truth is, abuse.

I’m the United States alone more than 12 million women and men in America are abused and experience IPV, intimate partner violence, a year. With that said who really knows what is happening behind doors during COVID-19.

Organizations such as SAMHSA are still trying to make it known that resources are just as available during the pandemic, in hopes that less if not all cases can be addressed.

However, not only are abuse and IPV cases expected and are rising in the United States. Japan also had talked about there rise in cases as well as the change of behaviors quarantine had created for some.

With this in mind you may ask,  what will happen next? Well that is up to you. Making awareness, reaching out to love ones, and providing support is the best thing for everyone. However if you know someone dealing with abuse please due reach out and be there for them however they need you to be.

  1. This has been an underreported side effect of COVID-19 and associated lockdowns. It seems the story in the media has been mostly about parents being stuck at home with their children, or the boredom so many of us have experienced during lockdown. For those living with their abusers, though, this has meant essentially being trapped with them all day, every day, for months on end. Not only has this provided more opportunity for abuse, but it has also isolated victims from their support systems. It is important to note that while work, school, and even healthcare are still happening, the lack of privacy associated with doing these things from home can make it difficult to impossible for victims to ask for help or access resources even if they want to.

You also make a fantastic point about the true nature of the numbers; intimate partner violence and domestic abuse are chronically underreported in the best of times. If we can see a spike in reported cases, we can safely assume that there are many, many more that we do not know about.

  2. Your article raised many questions in my head. I wonder how domestic abuse hotlines and resources have had to adjust during the pandemic, and if the legal aspect of reporting abuse has changed. I would think the pandemic might put constraints on resources and slow down the legal process of reporting abuse, and it would also probably make seeking help seem more daunting. Your article also makes me think of child abuse and how the pandemic has likely worsened it for many children globally. With schools being closed, there has been a sharp decline in reported cases of child abuse. This is not because child abuse simply stopped happening, but because teacher’s are no longer reporting on their abused student since they are not seeing them. I worry for what this means for abuse victims as the pandemic continues on and many schools are returning completely virtually. How do you think abuse hotlines and other resources can adapt to better serve victims during these times? Do you think there’s a way for teachers to continue being able to report abuse even if they only see their students virtually?
