Humanitarianism, defined as the actions of individuals that promote human welfare and happiness, has seen both its highs and lows as the pandemic continues on. To designate the outcome of the virus as either good or bad for humanitarianism would be impossible, however even with downfalls, the future is looking bright.
The potential rise of humanitarianism can be attributed to the virus’s ability to bring matters of human welfare and equity to light. Data showing the disparity in victims of the virus, showcase the inequity in access to healthcare and other resources that promote wellbeing. In the United States, the virus disproportionately affected African Americans; this, however, did bring more attention to the Black Lives Matter movement. Also, attention to crowded housing and detainment centers, throughout the world has risen, and with this there is prospect for reform. Refugees largely make up the number of cases as there are 25 million refugee camps in the world, subject to overcrowding thus susceptible to the virus.
While the virus has heightened food insecurity and unemployment, along with other extreme matters, it has also brought more attention to these issues, and hopefully will push for a solution. As of now hope is seen in large donors who have pledged money to the cause, the UN humanitarian appeal raising money, as well other efforts to combat this issue.
Along with international aid, there has been a rise in “everyday humanitarianism”. People are reaching out to their communities to help; providing business to struggling businesses, volunteering, and simply providing support to a neighbor have been on the rise. There is even a gallery showcasing how the pandemic has changed lives.
With the general slowdown of everyday routine, people are able to open their eyes to the problems of the world; as well as spend more time on their wellbeing and supporting that of others. Workers that may have been overlooked are now essential, and being appreciated at last. So while the COVID-19 crisis devastated, it also just may be a stepping stone for a brighter future of humanitarianism.

This post was a nice contrast to what people are often seeing on the news today. With COVID-19 causing suffering across the globe, it is easy to get lost in the negative; however, it was a very welcome change to look at the positive possibilities for change accompanying COVID-19. This is something I’ve tried to do throughout the pandemic and something I think this class has tried to emphasize through the council on foreign relations pop up case, civic engagement activity, speakers’ final thoughts, and more.
Personally, as the inequities and shortfalls of our healthcare system made headlines, I saw the possibility that Americans may finally be behind universal healthcare; A positive change that is happening. Similarly, citizens’ concerns about going to the polls during a pandemic are causing more states to allow for mail-in voting, making it easier for Americans to vote.
This post was not only a nice change from all the negativity in the media, but I really love your inclusion of everyday humanitarianism and the specific story at the end of how citizens are gathering around to help each other. Wholesome stories like that are so often lost in the media and crucial in providing hope for people as well as inspiring more acts of kindness. Something that I have been wondering in regards to this is how have volunteer efforts been interrupted, both at home and abroad? Many issues existed before the pandemic and it’s interesting how they’ve taken a backseat to the current crisis, but how have they adjusted efforts to build sustainable housing abroad or feed those in poverty without putting volunteers at risk?
This post shows a contrast to the negative media circling the effects of Covid-19. While many of its effects have been negative, it’s nice to see positive outcomes from the virus. My hope is that moving forward, this humanitarianism continues past our social distancing and quarantining. I’m looking forward to people making a habit of this and continuing to acknowledge and appreciate essential workers, bring attention to social injustice, and support small businesses in their community. The current slower pace of life for many individuals might be why we are seeing them take part in promoting general welfare. This increase in kindness could inspire real change which we are increasingly noticing a need for.
