Covid-19 and its Effect on the 2020 Presidential Election

2020 was set to be a pivotal year from the beginning with the U.S. Presidential election
taking place. Early this year, the world was turned on its axis with the global outbreak of Covid19, changing life for many as they knew it. Now with COVID-19 at the forefront of everyone’s
mind and a spotlight in the media, it has made the Presidential election take a back seat. With
rallies being canceled, some primaries have been suspended. COVID-19 has changed the
The presidential election in the U.S., unlike anything we have ever witnessed before. The
unemployment rate at the start of 2020 was at a record-breaking 3.6%, the stock market was
soaring, and the economy was on track for a bolstering year. It appeared as if Trump was a shoo-in for the White House for another four years. Then COVID hit, and everything thing
changed. Suddenly there was little to no talk about the upcoming election, and President Trump
was in the spotlight every day with his handling of the pandemic being scrutinized for his every
move and word. At the same time, Presidential candidate Joe Biden sat on the sidelines watching
time pass. With Trump being scrutinized for his every move, his polls took a turn for the worse,
only improving Biden’s positioning in the polls for doing essentially nothing. It has been a
challenge for the candidates to get out in front of the voters with social distancing guidelines in
place, preventing larger gatherings. This has resulted in television and social media to be their
largest platform. However, there are many voters that these methods will not reach. How will the
candidates reach these voters in place of in-person rallies remain to be seen, and now with talks
of mail-in ballots for the election, this may very well prove to be a historic election- even more
so than initially anticipated

 

With two-thirds of Americans saying that they feel that COVID-19 is going to affect the
election as shown in the figure above, it is more important now than ever to ensure that the
American voters have the fair and uninterrupted election that they are entitled to have. With 80%
of Democrats under the belief that COVID-19 is going to affect the election in some capacity,
that may be a sign that Trump’s proven record of a strong economy and low unemployment rates
may be stronger than his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no telling what is going
to happen come election day. Today’s society only adds a new level of complexity to the already
complex, polarized, political system that we have in place today.
