Since the beginning of this Pandemic, President Trump and many others have stated that with a vaccine available to the public the Coronavirus spread can finally end. As claimed by Mass General, there are approximately 135 vaccines in development worldwide. With 7 billion people in this world one of these vaccines are bound to be successful to fight Covid-19, right? But even if there is a vaccine to fight the virus how do we know it is effective or the public will want to receive the vaccine? According to MDLinx, health experts have said at least 70% of the population may need immunity from exposure or a vaccine to herd protection. With that being said, the large number of people against receiving a vaccine due to the effectiveness or anti-vaccine views are largely concerning as the virus still exists and continues to spread. In the report of a preliminary study, “About one-sixth (16%) of all respondents specifically self-identified as anti-vaxxers. Among these, 44% said they won’t get vaccinated against COVID-19.” These results according to Dr. Motta are what they expected to find from the study because people usually are prone to believe what they have always believed, but the public’s views do have the ability to change once a vaccine becomes available. Aside from the preexisting bias against vaccines the accelerated efforts and lack of a long-term safety record when pushing out a vaccine is going to play into the public’s concerns when a vaccine is available. In actions of prevention, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently working to ensure “vaccine confidence” and plan to include this in federal efforts. Director Robert Redfield encourages Advocates to urge campaigns that include personal messages and storytelling when it comes to the development of a vaccine. The FDA is also doing their part to ensure the effectiveness through issued guidelines for the approval of COVID-19 vaccines. Overall, the development of making vaccines available to fight the Coronavirus can and will lead to additional issues because of the bias and skeptics of the public. Therefore, voices like the CDC and FDA need to continue to share additional measures that ensure the effectiveness and reliability of the vaccine while also continuing to share ways to keep yourself and others safe without receiving a vaccine if one might choose.
