Since the beginning of this Pandemic, President Trump and many others have stated that with a vaccine available to the public the Coronavirus spread can finally end. As claimed by Mass General, there are approximately 135 vaccines in development worldwide. With 7 billion people in this world one of these vaccines are bound to be successful to fight Covid-19, right? But even if there is a vaccine to fight the virus how do we know it is effective or the public will want to receive the vaccine? According to MDLinx, health experts have said at least 70% of the population may need immunity from exposure or a vaccine to herd protection. With that being said, the large number of people against receiving a vaccine due to the effectiveness or anti-vaccine views are largely concerning as the virus still exists and continues to spread. In the report of a preliminary study, “About one-sixth (16%) of all respondents specifically self-identified as anti-vaxxers. Among these, 44% said they won’t get vaccinated against COVID-19.” These results according to Dr. Motta are what they expected to find from the study because people usually are prone to believe what they have always believed, but the public’s views do have the ability to change once a vaccine becomes available. Aside from the preexisting bias against vaccines the accelerated efforts and lack of a long-term safety record when pushing out a vaccine is going to play into the public’s concerns when a vaccine is available. In actions of prevention, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently working to ensure “vaccine confidence” and plan to include this in federal efforts. Director Robert Redfield encourages Advocates to urge campaigns that include personal messages and storytelling when it comes to the development of a vaccine. The FDA is also doing their part to ensure the effectiveness through issued guidelines for the approval of COVID-19 vaccines. Overall, the development of making vaccines available to fight the Coronavirus can and will lead to additional issues because of the bias and skeptics of the public. Therefore, voices like the CDC and FDA need to continue to share additional measures that ensure the effectiveness and reliability of the vaccine while also continuing to share ways to keep yourself and others safe without receiving a vaccine if one might choose.

It is interesting to see that even with scientific data, we have people not only in The United States but also globally, we are against vaccines. Even during this global pandemic that is spreading at an unprecedented rate, people still call it ‘the sniffles.’ If we, as a nation, struggle to convince parents to vaccinate their children for the flu, mumps, and rubella- will they accept the COVID vaccine? With the flu vaccine, some people end up getting the flu, will it be the same with COVID? At the same time, COVID is still a mystery to scientists and a horror to the public. Will people rush to the clinic for this vaccine? There are too many moving targets to predict how our population will react. History has shown that fear can mobilize people. Whether it will mobilize people to protest and join the anti-vaccinator group or join the science; we do not know. At first, people will hesitate to receive the vaccine; no one wants to be the first guinea pig.
It should be mentioned there is a possibility that the vaccine isn’t going to be as effective as we’d like. There seems to be a growing number of repeat Covid cases, which would indicate that the antibodies we make against it are short lived. Convincing people to take it once would be difficult. Convincing them to take it repeatedly like a flu shot would be even more so. And then there’s the issue of the virus mutating, making the vaccine less effective still, and lowering confidence. It’s possible that the vaccine being ineffective could strengthen the anti-vaxx movement even further.
The increased efforts and lack of a long-term safety record associated with the introduction of a vaccine, in addition to dordle the preexisting anti-vaccine bias, will exacerbate the public’s concerns when a vaccine becomes available once it becomes available.
