The Epicenter revolving Chelsea, Massachusetts Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Chelsea, Massachusetts by far has reported the highest infection rate in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. With residents living in extremely tight conditions, it’s only a matter of time until the next individual gets affected. What’s next for Chelsea and how could conditions improve?

In the direction of uncertainty within the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s unpromising that conditions will improve anytime soon. As Massachusetts continues to progress amid the outbreak of cases reported, various towns remain heavily affected throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Chelsea, Massachusetts is among one of the highest rising epicenters six times the statewide average surging to an estimate of 2,907 people infected.
Within such a highly populated city, home to an estimated 40,000 Immigrant families among Polish, Irish, Honduran, Salvadorian, Mexican, Guatemalan, etc. The risk remains sorely among these populations as they are at higher risk of exposure based on the poor conditions there are often confronted too.
“The bad news is that there’s a raging epidemic in Chelsea, and many people walking on the street don’t know that they’re carrying the virus and that they may be exposing uninfected individuals in their families,” said Dr. John Iafrate, vice chairman of MGH’s pathology department and the study’s principal investigator.
The majority of these families within the 80% are often low-income households who work providing the majority of essential services. Placing them among disproportionately higher rates of becoming infected in their working establishments. In most cases, employers are demanding workers to return back to work without implicating proper precautions to ensure the prevention of possible spread. But the reality of the situation remains that most of these individuals must return to work because that is the only way they are able to provide for their family and continue to pay for annual expenses.
With the increment of vulnerable families, there luckily have been many organizations in which families can apply which help supply various resources. An organization known as the “Chelsea Collaborative” provides a bilingual team of volunteers to help residents in any needed service. Recently, they have set up weekly distributions of boxes supplying many with groceries, personal necessities, sanitary items, and more for community members to come to pick up on each specified day assigned. As well as providing an extension of housing resources such as rental assistance programs and hotel quarantine options for those who are among heavily affected.
Overall, Chelsea is among one of the most vulnerable communities in Massachusetts that severely has been affected throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Small crowded communities such as Chelsea are economically being impacted every day as the number of cases continues to rise. It’s important that we continue to help and provide resources to those less fortunate. As Chelsea’s conditions slowly continue to improve in some aspects, hope remains that no family is left behind and is provided any additional resources needed.

I like how you made this article more personal to the readers by relating it to Massachusetts. I was able to fully understand the whereabouts of Chelsea, and how outrageous 2,907 people being infected there truly is. Also, the fact that these are all low-income households make it even worse. They’re all forced to go to work to maintain their families, and imagine they are feeling sick? They will most likely not want to get tested and miss work. A few weeks ago I wasn’t feeling well. I decided I should get tested. First of all, it’s difficult to find a place that taking patients immediately. I had one place tell me there was a week and a half waiting list to get tested. Which honestly, doesn’t make sense. Then I decided to go to TUFTS. The line was a three hours long. So not only do these families have to take off work if they are feeling ill, they may have to sit in a line with other infected people for up to three hours.
