How are fragile and poor countries dealing with the pandemic? By Marie Kohlenberg

Fragile and poor countries have to take different approaches to COVID-19 than the rest of the world due to circumstances like food insecurity and poverty. The trust in authorities, how local communities are dealing with the pandemic, and what part education plays in an effective response are important topics which reveal how vulnerable countries deal with the virus.

 

Local institutions as well as health, social protection and education are ways the people interact with the state. Those are instruments to build trust and confidence in the government. Equal access to health services and the enforcement of the legitimacy of local and national authorities has to take place in order to maintain the people’s trust and to combat the virus. It is essential that people trust the government in order to work together to fight the pandemic, otherwise fragile countries have no chance to achieve that goal.[1]

In countries like the Philippines where there is no to minimal testing, standard health regulations are difficult to implement. Reverse Isolation is a method where the most vulnerable in a community are physically isolated in order to keep them and everyone else safe. Another method called ‘Task Shifting’ has been implemented due to the shortage of health workers. Local people are trained to do specific health related task in order to support the doctors and nurses.[2]

“Education is one of the largest and most consequential government activities in Africa”. Some school programs provide students with take-home rations and support families to send their children to school, provide nutritional and economic support. Further, the response to the pandemic is supported by the Education Sector. Meaning that it’s important to empower children with knowledge in order to change their families’ behavior by for example sharing new public health guidance through education.This method has been adopted by Tanzania, Ghana, and Uganda as a part of their COVID-19 response. Lastly, ‘research shows that unequal provision of education services increases the risk of social unrest and conflict’.[3]

 

To conclude, it’s important to take a look at how fragile and poor countries deal with the virus since the media doesn’t really address that. It is a huge task for each government to take measures in order to keep their citizens safe given the initial situation of a lack of health services, safety, and economic stability.
