What’s Happening?
Florida Governor Ron Desantis ( aka “mini-Trump”) has failed to control the spread of COVID-19 in the state of Florida. From closing too late and opening too soon, to hardly mandating any mask and social-distancing orders, to wanting schools to reopen despite the rising surge in cases across the state and safety concerns.
Hospitals across the state are now up to full capacity with ICU beds and are struggling to keep accepting new patients and they’re having patients go home and quarantine because every bed in the hospital is unavailable.
Florida’s Plans For Higher Education
Colleges and Universities across the state of Florida have announced their plans for reopening their campuses in the fall. Florida State University will open campus with social distancing and mask-wearing measures in place. The University of Florida will open with face to face, hybrid, and online learning for students. The University of Central Florida (which is the number two university in the country with over 438 coronavirus cases) will open with a mix of face to face, hybrid, and online courses, students can choose to do classes fully online if they wish to do so.
These plans have been approved by the board of governors, and guidelines recommended by the CDC will be in place at all of these universities for when students come back to campus this fall.
How Will Sports Handle Florida?
As we all know, Florida is filled with many sports fans, but since Florida has become a huge hot spot of cases, many sports organizations have plans to keep playing amid the pandemic.
Organizations like The NBA, who just started their season on July 30th, have bounced back into the game after a hiatus that began in March, with 22 teams including the Miami Heat, and the Orlando Magic which are the two NBA teams in Florida.
How the Pandemic is affecting Minority groups
Data from Florida’s Department Of Health have shown that minority groups including Black and Hispanic people have shown faster COVID-19 infection and death rates than white people. Cases from Black residents in Florida have increased by 19.6% and death rates rose to 30.2%. Hispanic Florida residents cases have shown a 17.3% increase and a 7.7% rise in death rates.
All of this data was recorded in April when we were a month into the pandemic.
In a Podcast by WABE, Rose Scott talked to Veronica (who is a healthcare reporter at WLRN and based in Miami, Florida which is the city with the most cases in the state) about how Florida has become a hotspot state overnight based on her knowledge and experience.
She also explained how Black and Latino residents in Miami especially have been heavily impacted by the virus. It’s what led up to opening walk-up clinics to have testing done in neighborhoods in Florida because testing in the state has become such a problem.
How Are Businesses Being Affected?
Businesses both big and small have been severely affected by the pandemic. But in hotspot like Florida, it serves as a more serious threat. In South Florida, nearly 3,000 businesses have shut down as a result of the pandemic as of July. All in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, 417 restaurants, and 285 retail stores.
Many business owners say that they had to use some creativity in order for their businesses to survive, like telling employees to work from home and social distancing and mask-wearing protocols for restaurants.
Major Theme Parks and Covid-19
Two of the country’s largest theme parks which include Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando have reopened with major protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has opened up with required mask-wearing mandates and social distancing requirements as well as fully operating their rides and temperature screenings for all guests. Universal has also reopened with the same requirements and protocols that Disney is taking to ensure that all guests abide by the CDC guidelines. They have also closed some of the rides temporarily for which guests are unable to social distance from each other.
Even though these parks in particular are taking serious protocols to keep guests safe, it still serves as a huge risk for rising case numbers.
As of August 2020, Disney announced that they will be cutting park hours for all four theme parks beginning in September.
As a Florida resident myself, I have seen a change in my day to day life and experiencing a huge change in the way I’m personally living, I’m honestly terrified that my state is continuing to reach a scary number of positive cases (up to 10,000) every day, and it looks like this is what it will be like for a while.
