Amongst the times of the Covid-19 global pandemic, nearly everything has been negatively affected in almost every aspect. Schools, businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, and hospitals have all been heavily effected economically and/or healthfully. Prisons and correctional facilities across the globe, particularly across the United States have been a major hotspot for when it comes to Covid-19 transmission rates escalating and effecting the incarcerated. Now more than ever, the country needs prison reform.
According to the American journal of preventive medicine, “The correctional environment imposes additional risks, Overcrowding, poor ventilation, close habitation, or dormitory-style housing will increase COVID-19 transmission. In addition, institutions strictly control everyday items such as soap, cleaning supplies, and hand sanitizer and rarely provide spare clothing or bedding. These practices can lead to poor personal hygiene and may also contribute to virus spread.” (Montoya-Barthelemy, Andre G). Providing such poor conditions as a punishment may actually lead to increased cases within a facility which can lead to increased death rates across the country.
As stated in the American journal of public health, “Compliance with the basic recommendation of frequent hand washing is impossible if no soap is provided and ineffective when limited supplies of soap have to be shared” (Nowotny, Kathryn). The limited supply of antibacterial products and personal protective equipment within a facility that breaks the social-distancing guidelines, will attribute to the cause of a highly infected facility.
According to Health Affairs, “Testing and screening for COVID-19 infections in jails and prisons is absolutely critical, as contact tracing is a feasible means of mitigating the spread of disease in a closed institution. But, as is the case throughout the U.S., availability of COVID-19 tests has been delayed and/or limited for the nation’s more than 2 million incarcerated people. Moreover, national guidelines have not been developed to ensure that all correctional residents and employees are screened for known symptoms (fever and cough). As state and local public health systems increase capacity for testing in communities, it remains uncertain whether jurisdictions are accounting for the urgent need for robust COVID-19 screening and testing in their correctional facilities” (Williams, Brie). It is definitely important for prisons to have more access to Covid tests, considering the closed environment that incarcerators must face.

I find it really interesting to look at how COVID-19 affects prisons in the US alongside the Black Lives Matter protests that have been happening nationwide. It is the protestor’s right and risk to attend these protests during a pandemic, but when police officials begin showing up to protests and arresting large numbers of people at once, those people must have been at a higher risk of contracting the virus. I have read many first hand accounts of protestors saying how they were zip tied and held in close quarters with others for hours. With not being able to use your hands to adjust a mask, there must have been many spikes in numbers in prisons as well as hospitals after people leaving the protests or being bailed out of their arrest.
