Domestic Violence Rise during Covid-19 Timilty

Covid-19 has brought many hardships for a lot of people since the beginning of lockdown. People are losing their jobs and struggling to maintain safety in these dark times. One crisis that our governments did not prepare for, was how to keep domestic violence victims safe as possible while being in lockdown with their abusers. Back in 2017 during Hurricane Harvey, there was an increase in domestic violence cases which was a crisis that caused a lot of stress much like Covid-19 is currently. Although Covid-19 is very new and information about domestic violence increase is not yet finalized, studies have shown that in times of extreme stress, like losing a job causing financial stress or social isolation, causes an increase of violence within the home. Hurricane Harvey proved this to be true and the governments should have thought about how this would affect victims in yet another crisis. Much like Harvey, the government downplayed this virus and the severity of it which did not give these victims enough time to make plans to escape their abusers and go to a safe place before lockdown. With the stay at home order implemented to try to reduce the spread of the virus, this caused shelters to become unsafe due to little sanitary resources that were provided. These shelters and organizations are supposed to help and protect victims, but with little funding and time allotted to them, they were unable to keep up with the demands of lockdown. Many of these institutions and shelters were widely underfunded before the pandemic with little money or resources going to them. With our economy struggling, they are being forced to shut down because they do not have the resources to keep these victims safe from spread of infection.Mind control and isolation is a very common form of abuse used on victims. Since lockdown, these abusers know that their victims have no shelters or help centers to go to and they are no longer able to escape to family and friends houses, so there is more likely to be abuse in the household. The governments largely failed to prepare  for this virus in general which caused there to be no resources for these domestic violence victims when lockdown was ordered. Our government and others around the world needs to pay close attention to how time is of the essence for these victims getting to a safe place during a crisis.

  1. The increase of domestic violence during the pandemic is a symptom of the lack of preparation for crises by the federal government. This lack of a national plan for responding to the virus displays the government’s inaction when presented with warning signs. The government disregarded the brief window before the disaster that should have been used for alerting the people about how we were going to respond to the virus. Those who lived with abusers needed more time to prepare so they could find a safe place away from their abusers. If the federal government had more communication with the people about what was going to happen next so the people had time to prepare many could have been saved from abuse. These people who are already abused and marginalized were forgotten once again when it came to responding to an impending threat. This further begs the question of why does America seem to struggle more than other developed nations in creating and executing a plan to ensure the safety of its people? What can we do in the future to better plan for crises?

    • Yes exactly! The lack of preparation seemed to be the downfall for this entire virus which inevitably hurts many communities including the victims of domestic violence. Its so sad how we rarely think of these groups of people in times like these just because we aren’t able to see them.I often think about that question that how America seems to be struggling the most to help our people even though we are known for being so great and having money and resources. It seems as if its a priority issue more than anything. We as a country need to start helping these victims instead of putting them on the back burner constantly. Thank you for your response!!

  2. You caught my eye when you said that the government did not prepare for more cases of domestic violence which can also lead to sexual assault happening to people of all ages. To be sure no one was prepared for this pandemic and I feel vulnerable for the ones that do not have a stable income right now causing them to lose jobs, not be able to support their families. My heart aches for the ones dealing with domestic violence as well as sexual assault. You never know what is going on behind closed doors and it is truly heartbreaking that people can be so cruel. It is clear that the government did not prepare for this pandemic in the best way possible. They did not think about the lives of these victims. This further supports my thinking on how no one seems to care about victims being abused… It could have been happening for years and ongoing, but they as the victim could possibly be too traumatized to speak up because it would bring back bad memories. Your argument raises a question in my perspective. What do you think the government should do in order to prevent more cases like this and to follow up, what can we as a community to do helo one another during the most vulnerable times?

    • Thank you for your response Elaine! It is so disheartening that the abuse only seems to get a little bit of light when a crisis is happening and even then its scarce. I think there can be more funding towards our shelters provided by the government, which could help with sanitary resources and more of a spending ability to go towards beds. I think as a community we can donate extra supplies we have at home including bedding, sanitary items, and others. Im sure in most cities these shelters have a website or phone number people could reach out to to see what these shelters are in need of!

  3. Domestic violence is such a prevalent issue, especially now, but sometimes it seems like, as you pointed out, the government does not prioritize it. I did not know a lot about how COVID-19 has perpetuated this societal issue, but your blog did a great job of getting information across quickly. Looking back to Hurricane Harvey did an excellent job of pointing out the shortcoming of the government’s response. I liked your point about underfunded shelters, as it makes it nearly impossible for victims of domestic abuse to escape if places meant to provide safety cannot properly function. Funding shelters should be something discussed more as we look to the inequities the pandemic has exposed. Until lockdown is fully lifted, many victims have no way of escape and no support system. Great job pointing out an important issue not often discussed!

    • I think that the government did not prioritize this entire virus right away so having them prioritize these victims seems unlikely. Im hoping if more people bring the abuse to light then the funding of these shelters will increase and people will be more aware of the treatment of domestic violence victims. Thank you for your response!!

  4. With the initial governmental response to COVID-19 being that of nonchalance, many were unprepared for the sudden stay at home orders and closures of businesses, including victims of domestic violence. Many victims now lack a job to get out of their home or the financial means to stay in a hotel room, if any around them are open. It is also incredibly frustrating to know that shelters and resources many victims of domestic violence often reach out to are either low on funds or closed due to the impacts of the Coronavirus. Perhaps the government could provide relief funds to these resources, and allow victims to get out of an unsafe home environment? Steps must be taken to ensure that if a crisis such as COVID-19 happens again that victims of domestic abuse are not forgotten.

    • Thank you for your response. I completely agree that the government should have provided some sort of relief funds for these victims considering before the pandemic these shelters were basically running on “fumes”. It does seem like in times of crisis’, these victims are forgotten and hopefully when the next crisis happens, our governments will be better prepared.

  5. Domestic violence is a topic that should always be talked about even in times like these because it still exists. For this reason, I was drawn to this blog post. You spoke about how the ongoing pandemic has “caused shelters to become unsafe due to little sanitary resources that were provided.” If you had the power, what plan do you think can be implemented to keep domestic violence victims safe? When it comes to how our governments are reacting to domestic violence levels, I agree that they need to pay close attention to how time is of the essence for these victims, getting to a safe place not only through this time but also through a future crisis.
