The United States’s Healhcare System Is On Its Last Legs – By Joseph Tonjes

The Problems with the United States’ System:

The United States failure to deal with the COVID-19 crisis when other nations around the world have had much easier times dealing with the crisis shows the weakness of the American healthcare system. The United States as of July 26th has the highest mortality rate in the world per 100,000 population and the most deaths to COVID-19 as well.

The American healthcare system is heavily reliant on insurance due to the extreme cost for health services when compared to other nations around the world. To make matters worse, American health insurance is often tied to employment where businesses give insurance to their employees but the COVID-19 pandemic has led to mass unemployment leaving many without insurance

As well, due to the cost tied heath services those who do not have money are not as likely as those with money to seek out health services. This is also the same group that will have to continue to work during the pandemic and not have their work moved to be done at home like many other jobs did.

How Other Nations are Doing a Better Job and Why:

While the United States struggles to keep the pandemic at bay, nations like South Korea, Australia and the United Kingdom have all done a much better job dealing with the pandemic. These three countries have universal public health insurance and which has been effective in dealing with the pandemic by allowing everyone in the country to have health insurance that they can rely on.

These nations have heavily invested into a public health system that allows for everyone living in the country to have access to health services no matter how much money they have or even if they are employed. These programs in these nations are vastly superior to the current system in the United States and the US should be looking to nations like these to deal with the pandemic.

Though they are not without criticism as the United Kingdom struggled in the beginning to deal with the pandemic but this was not due to how the healthcare system functions like the problems in the United States but due to the lack of investment into the system. This goes to how badly the system is in the United States as despite how much money the country puts into healthcare it cannot deal with COVID-19.

Debunking the Misconceptions:

Many when arguing against the switch to a socialized healthcare system talk about Italy and point out how badly the nation did with COVID-19 at the start. The reason why this is a bad argument against is due to the fact Italy has gotten a handle on the pandemic unlike the United States which still struggles to deal with the pandemic. As well, compared to other nations with socialized healthcare what happened in Italy is an outlier as most of the nations with socialized healthcare did not do as badly dealing with the pandemic while the United States continues to.

The other common misconception is that the current administration is solely to blame for the pandemic being dealt with so badly so there is no need to change the current system. The problem is the healthcare system in America should be made to be resilient enough that it can function no matter the change in the Executive. As well, nations like the United Kingdom are not doing as badly despite also having an administration that does not support the healthcare system as much as it maybe should. Moreover, it can be argued that due to how much money can be made in the health care system the lobbying by the system is the reason why America has done such a bad job passing legislation. In other countries, where healthcare is run by the government and controlled by the government this conflict involving profits does not exist.

This is why the COVID-19 pandemic is an indictment of the current United States healthcare system and the nation will be driven towards a system of socialized healthcare in part due to the failings of the system.

Why this Marks the End of the United States Healthcare System in its Current Form:

The days of the current United States healthcare system are numbered because its flaws which have already been a cause for complaint have been amplified due to the COVID-10 pandemic. Candidates who have made changing the healthcare system like Bernie Sanders almost made enough waves to become the Democratic nominee and now with COVID-19 further demonstrating the flaws with the current system. It would be wholly unsurprising if the question about what to do with the healthcare system will be important for years to come.

The United States stands as one of the only highly developed nations lacking really any form of socialized medicine and it shows with how badly the nation is dealing with the COVID-19 crisis. Socialized medicine is a health care system where the government covers the cost of healthcare through regulation and taxation and in the United States private institutions pay money to keep the system going. This means healthcare in the United States is run as a business not a system to help the citizens of the country deal with medical issues. As well, Americans anger over profits being more important than the people in the eyes of the government may be a further nail in the coffin for a for profit system like the American healthcare system

If the United States wants to be able to deal with this pandemic and deal with any other healthcare issues that may come up in the future, it will switch to a socialized medicine system like the many countries around the world that have dealt with the pandemic already.

  1. I wonder why Russia is on that picture. I was born and raised in Russia and never ever in my live I had to pay for medical help. Wether it was a surgery or regular GP check up, or even calling the ambulance (which is a regular thing in Russia, people call ambulance and doctors to visit them at home for any reason, even just a fever or migraine etc. It is available 24/7 and free of charge). Our healthcare is free, you can get any type of medical help, even a dentistry. Healthcare system here in United States is shocking and humiliating. Really. When I had to deal with it for the first time, I took it as a personal offense, I was upset, angry and felt robbed. I also didn’t and still don’t feel that I am taking a good care of my body, because having a health insurance I still can’t afford most of the things and don’t want to go to a clinic with whatever question I have as I an afraid to receive a bill I’ll never be able to pay. The price with insurance card is still ridiculously high, whilst the quality of help is pretty low. I feel very sorry for all the people in America and such a struggle they all have to go through. I hope pandemic will be the beginning of a big changes in this field for United States.

  2. If the coronavirus proves one thing about our country it is the fact that our healthcare system can function the way it is. The fact that the US has the most deaths per 100,000 people says more about how antiquated our healthcare system than the overall handling of the coronavirus. The arguments against socialized health care are cherry picked by the opposition and often leave out essential statistics that show socialized health care positively, your example of Italy and its handling of the virus being a good one. Fears and stigma have surrounded everything even remotely socialist, from presidential candidates to progressive reforms to outdated policies. As long as these fears permeate American culture, even the most basic forms of socialized healthcare will be demonized. For example, look at the Affordable Care Act and conservative opinions of it.
