  1. This is a really interesting look into why mail-in voting can be especially important in this upcoming election. The pandemic could be just the excuse needed to give them more representation and available polling places.

    • I agree, mail-in voting will be a huge part of the upcoming election, but I think we need a good balance of both. Some people feel more comfortable going to the polls and are willing to do so, but others are certainly nervous and would feel much safer casting their ballot via mail. However, I feel that minorities in the US have limited access to both options. There are few polling places near them, and they may have trouble securing a mail-in ballot.

  2. I completely agree that minorities will be more oppressed than ever in the upcoming election due to the closing of in-person polling. And personally, I never knew that mail-in ballots were more likely to be rejected when submitted by a minority. However, I think it’s also important to mention the homeless population in the United States, which will also have extreme difficulty voting in this upcoming election.
    The United States has a very large population of homeless adults, and over 50% of this population is made up of minority races. This means that these voices will be suppressed even further when they are not able to cast ballots in this year’s presidential election, due to their inability to cast any mail-in votes at all. For this reason, I agree with you that it is extremely important to find a way for these voices to be heard, even if that means opening physical polling centers during this pandemic.

    • Thank you for your comment! That is absolutely true – the homeless population in the US is definitely a minority and they, too, struggle to cast their votes. With no permanent addresses, they would be unable to even receive a mail-in ballot application. And besides mail-in voting, are they able to vote at the polls anyways? Many polling places require you to confirm your address in order to receive a ballot. And in some states, you need a government-issued ID, which many homeless people don’t have. Further, how can homeless people register to vote? These days, registering to vote is as easy as going online – but many homeless people do not have Internet access.
