Professional sports were one of the many things that were taken away from society due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the MLB nearing the start of the regular season, the NFL looking to begin offseason mini-camps, and the NBA and NHL nearing the start of the postseason, each league’s respective commissioner decided to suspend all play until further notice. Not only would the indefinite shutdowns of the four major sports go on to affect all fans throughout the world, the United States’ economy would also go on to take a major hit thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. I am here to argue that the restart of professional sports will positively impact the United States’ economic status, as well as provide a sense of normalcy based on the fact that something that was once lost is now (slowly but surely) coming back.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the sports industry was a booming market that profusely benefited the United States’ economy, although not to take any credit away from other booming industries/businesses. A Culture Shock Among Society

When you look at how the Covid-19 pandemic affected society from a cultural standpoint, the shutdown of sports caused most people to “lose it”. During a time that seemed to be full of emptiness, sports could’ve been the entertainment factor that most people needed to have some sense of normalcy going on for them; however, these people, instead, had to resort to watching replays of games from past in order to entertain themselves.

Politics Could Play a Crucial Role

Other than major economic recession and a culture shock, politics, believe it or not, seem to play a role in benefiting the return of professional sports. We see an apolitical figure such as Dr. Anthony Fauci as someone who the governors of all fifty states look towards for more information about the Covid-19 pandemic; however, Dr. Fauci has no say as to whether an individual state should or should not open. According to an article from the Boston Globe, Dr. Fauci endorses the idea of returning to play games without any spectators in attendance, and with the professional athletes following specific protocol to ensure the safety themselves as well as their teammates. However, the decision (of loosening state-mandated restrictions so that sports activities could resume) is up to each state’s governor in the end. In the case of governors “okaying” sports to resume in their given state, the torch would then be passed to the league commissioners, so they can come up with a concrete plan to resume their respective sport’s league.

The Facts

While a return to play plan is seemingly in the works through all these higher-up personalities, it is also important to know that the Covid-19 pandemic won’t just vanish tomorrow.
