The United States currently has the largest population of immigrants in the entire world, with those entering from virtually every country around the globe. In fact, there are more immigrants in the US than any other minority group, including black Americans. Yet, despite this large demographic, immigrants are often ignored when country-wide issues arise. They live in constant fear over their own livelihoods in many instances, with the COVID-19 pandemic being no exception. Going into the pandemic, The Urban Institute’s Well-Being and Basic Needs Survey (WBNS), shows that one in seven adults in immigrant families reported that they avoided a public support system such as Medicaid, SNAP, and housing subsidies for fear of risking or losing the green card status of themselves or a family member, despite the fact that some public assistance systems would not have any effect on their legal status. This lack of understanding of the public charge rule leads immigrants to unnecessarily avoid benefits that their families desperately need during dire times. In addition, there is a severe lack of representation for immigrant families, both undocumented and authorized residents alike, in federal legislation. Most non-citizens are ineligible for state or federal aid, such as food aid, and are unable to collect federal stimulus aid as well. The federal CARES act, which was passed in order to ease the financial burdens of those in America due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 crisis, provided no aid for undocumented workers or their family members, even family members who are U.S. citizens. Along with this lack of aid, immigrants are disproportionately affected by the pandemic as they are incredibly overrepresented in frontline jobs that present more risk to themselves and their families, and which often are low-paying jobs which don’t provide basic employer benefits such as health insurance or sick time, leaving them to suffer from COVID-19 at incredibly high rates. Additionally, immigrants had a higher risk of losing their jobs as businesses closed or cut down on employees. The Urban Institute’s Health Reform Monitoring Survey demonstrates that in adults 18-64, non-citizen Hispanic adults make up the largest percentage of those who lost jobs, work hours, or work-related income because of the pandemic (69 percent), leaving adult immigrants at a severe economic disadvantage as they struggle to stay afloat and provide for their families. This economic disadvantage, combined with the constant fear over their place in the country and a lack of access to public information leaves immigrants vulnerable and confused. This makes it hard for them to feed their families or access proper healthcare during any time, however, a pandemic such as the COVID-19 crisis highlights these systems of inequalities further, leaving immigrants terrified for themselves and their families, and simultaneously exposing a lot about the United States as a whole.
