In the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic, information regarding the disease is highly sought after. In a typical health emergency, our attention would turn to the CDC, who in recent decades has been a cornerstone in preventing and researching the spread of diseases. However, with coronavirus cases continuing to rise, CDC guidelines and suggestions have been ignored by the government, which could cause issues in the public’s trust in the CDC.
The most recent instance occurred in a House and Education Committee meeting regarding the reopening of schools in the fall.
The CDC, who has already written guidelines on how schools could reopen safely, was barred by the White House from testifying in front of the committee. The Trump Administration’s explanation for the denial is that “We need our doctors focused on the pandemic response.”
This decision comes as no surprise, given the differing perspectives the CDC and President Trump hold on school reopenings. The CDC’s guidelines suggest schools to enforce social distancing, facemasks, and sanitation. Such requirements could throw a wrench in Trump’s
plan “to get them open quickly, beautifully, in the fall.”
Distrust in the CDC has been a common trend among all facets of our government. Coronavirus Response Coordinator Deborah Birx is even on record saying “There is nothing from the CDC I can trust.”
Even the very principles of science and research the CDC stands upon are being disrupted by President Trump who, during a Coronavirus Briefing, suggested that we treat Coronavirus by injecting household disinfectants. Needless to say, the statement had no basis in any research or studies, and can be considered harmful to even suggest such treatment.
The Center of Disease Control plays a large role in how the US responds to emergencies and distributes aid. The organization works closely with the federal government to get their work out to the public and into action. In recent years however, White House and Congressional interference has mired the work of the CDC.
This policy “mandates that its activities have the highest level of integrity to promote top quality public health.”
In its current condition, the CDC is unable to communicate its important information, leaving a void in the public’s knowledge of the Coronavirus. Currently, 64.6% of American adults trust the CDC, but as long as the CDC is denied a platform, we could see this number decline.
As the pandemic continues in America with no signs of stopping, and the issue becomes more partisan, information regarding Covid-19 can be weaponized.
According to the National Post, the theory of the origin of the Coronavirus being in the lab was found implausible by experts. Despite being only a rumor, it was believed, and led to the US’s departure from the WHO, who in Trump’s words was “too china-centric.”
If the public information is being manipulated, public perception will permanently be altered to trust a false narrative.
I think this is a good issue to bring to light, especially with all the biased media issues happening right now based on partisanship.
