The Coronavirus is exposing deep divides in society and is making it clear that people are not being affected equally. A few of the groups most heavily impacted by the pandemic include women, those with informal work, and people living in developing countries (“Coronavirus vs. Inequality”). Also, black communities have been notably more impacted by the virus than other groups (Chotiner). Inequality accelerates health disparities (Fisher et al.) and economic inequality plays a significant role in who is being the most impacted by the virus. Those with the least amount of resources or knowledge to fight the pandemic are being hit the hardest. According to the New York Times “…those in lower economic strata are likelier to catch the disease.” This functions in a vicious cycle that perpetuates more economic inequality and disease. The reasoning behind it is that being in a lower economic status makes you more likely to suffer from health disparities for example, an individual that is unable to afford health insurance may not go to the doctor if they are sick. Other factors can include: not having access to healthy foods, or living in a poor area with high levels of air pollution. The accumulation of these health disparities over a lifetime puts people more at risk to develop a chronic illness (Fisher et al.).
Families and individuals coping with medical problems can be limited to how much they are able to work, unfortunately this makes health costs become a larger proportion of their income leaving less money to pay for things like rent and groceries. This puts families further into poverty which puts them at risk for developing more disease because they are less able to pay for adequate care (Fisher et al.). The circumstances they are put in cause them to deal with significantly more risks than those that are privileged. As local and global communities we need to fight economic inequality to fight the Coronavirus, we must support those that are at the most risk and give them the resources and knowledge they need to protect themselves so that they don’t have to go to work and risk catching the virus because they need money to pay rent. As a people we are interconnected and in order to fight the virus we must unite and help those that are the most vulnerable.
