The Battle Between Covid-19 and Tuberculosis – Hanna Gleason

The coronavirus and tuberculosis have more similarities than you may think. TB and Covid-19 are each airborne and spread the same way and present with the same symptoms. The difference between the two is that TB has smaller pathogens and does not stay on surfaces  Covid-19 is larger and does. The Stop TB Partnership has found that there have been 59,625 Covid-19 deaths globally and 713,332 TB deaths which is about 13 times larger. Together, it will cause a large problem in society. According to The Global Fight, Covid-19 will have a huge impact on funding for testing along with prevention services for TB. There are already millions of cases of TB and the numbers will only go up from here. The coronavirus has taken over and is taking a huge toll on all TB patients. The testing for both Covid-19 and TB are very different but are essential for each diagnosis. Rather than having two separate tests for Covid-19 and TB, is there a way to get funding to make a universal test for both since they are so similar? There is testing and clinical trials being conducted to find an answer if latent TB can become more active with COVID-19. The studies have shown that each case was presented with the same symptoms occurring for a similar amount of time. There are a lot of factors that go into the consideration of Covid-19 being the reasoning behind the development of TB. The patient could have travelled recently, the severity of their symptoms, who they have been exposed to and many more. On the other hand, there are also Covid-19 cases that are asymptomatic and could affect TB patients even more because they wouldn’t know that they have been exposed.  Covid-19 and TB funding is going to be an issue for the next few years and there will be a battle between the two. There will also be an issue of testing for both since they are very similar, and the numbers are not accurate. A reoccurring issue is that healthcare professionals are presuming the cause of death is Covid-19 even if it is not and it could have been TB.
