The Second Wave

The Second Wave

By Farrah Kannan

As I head into my freshman year at Suffolk I wonder if COVID-19 will come back stronger in a second wave, causing the school year to be out of the ordinary. I started to be convinced that this might be the case when I read that Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) stated,  “next winter [could] actually be even more difficult than the one we just went through.” (Washington Post)

I think COVID-19 will come back during flu season making it harder than ever to determine whether someone has the coronavirus, the influenza virus, or the common cold. “An increase in COVID-19 cases in the fall could be troublesome because seasonal flu is likely to be accelerating at the same time. If the coronavirus surges in the fall and the flu season is bad, the combination could put hospitals and patients at risk.” (hopkinsmedicine.org.) This will not be a good situation, people having the flu and the virus will all be admitting themselves into the hospital causing a whirlpool of germ spreading and lack of space in hospitals making it much more worse in the fall than the first wave in March. This will result in schools, stores, and companies having to close down again.

Experts say COVID-19 is could be similar to the 1918 influenza, “There were at least three distinct waves of influenza in 1918 and 1919, which killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide.” (khn.org) Researchers say the pandemics are similar because they both attack the respiratory system. Khn.org also states, “The first wave began in March 1918 and eased by the summer. The second wave came in the fall, followed by a third wave during the winter and spring of 1919.” So far COVID-19 is on the same track as the 1918 and 1919 influenza. We need to take all the steps like wearing a mask and sanitizing to make sure history does not repeat itself and affect any more people. If things stay on track we just may be able to go back to a normal school year next year.

  1. This blog compares COVID-19 and the 1918 Influenza with many valid points. If the rate of infection of COVID-19 goes up again during flu season, the world would surely have to face a major obstacle with a second wave. Unfortunately, a factor that we need to consider is that in today’s world, politics has managed to embed itself into everything, including a pandemic. People have increased the risk of spread of the virus by not wearing masks only because of politics. However, while some say that this pandemic is similar to the 1918 Influenza and that it could also follow the same patterns, it is also important to consider the development of medicine and health industries since 1918.

As I read this post it also made me think about what will happen with this virus, will it have a second wave? Will it be worse In the winter? Or how long will we be able to be at school? This post really grabbed my attention. I found the most compelling thing about this post to be that many scientists are thinking it will be like the last pandemic and come in 3 waves. That is actually scary. As I move towards the end of this post I think back about all the things I have already learned about this virus and it connects to my post on how the many people are affected in different ways and not everyone is severe, but it doesn’t mean that we won’t be affected by a second wave if it comes. This post overall was very strong and interesting!

  6. Hey there, Farrah Kannan!

I just finished reading your article on the potential second wave of COVID-19 and I must say, it’s a thought-provoking piece. Your comparison of the current pandemic with the 1918 influenza pandemic is particularly striking. It’s a chilling reminder of how history can repeat itself if we’re not careful. I appreciate your emphasis on the importance of preventive measures like wearing masks and sanitizing to avoid a similar fate.

Your concerns about the overlap of the flu season with a potential second wave of COVID-19 are very valid. The strain on healthcare systems worldwide could be immense if we have to deal with two major health crises simultaneously. It’s a sobering thought and highlights the need for us to be even more vigilant in the coming months. I also share your hope that if we stay on track with preventive measures, we might be able to return to a normal school year next year. Keep up the great work and stay safe!
